confused I thought I'd try to set all my dampers to move off at the same time - quite a task !
Well all back together and there was a squeak when the sustain pedal was depressed. The obvious culprit was the bushing, or rather the remains of, where the vertical rod runs through a wood block screwed to the side of the case. But a replacement of this did nothing.
Action on the diningroom table - AGAIN! Surprise the squeaking is coming from the dampers, infact where the long ends of the springs rub in a little disc of felt !
Now I did not feel like removing all, or infact any of the dampers, after three days spent trying to line up each and every one!
One quick spray from a silicon-lube aerosol onto each felt did the trick!

It is usually a dummy damper lever which pushes the damper rod back when the pedal is not pressed.
