I've been on the forum for several years as FormerlyFlute but now I'm back to playing flute. I'm an empty nester living in a condo so I can play both piano and flute after work. I should probably change my display name.

I am surprised to find out how much learning piano these last few years has enhanced my flute playing. I more readily recognize chords, minor keys, different motifs. And playing flute first warms up my fingers for piano. I guess those folks running music schools know what they are doing making everyone learn piano!

I still much prefer listening to piano music. I could listen to piano music 24/7 but only a few flute pieces keep my attention if I'm not actually playing.

How about change it to "PreviouslyFormerlyFlute"? laugh

I find piano helps pretty much every other instrument because it's so orchestral, you keep track of more things than your own melodic line. When you learn a melodic instrument like flute, you are only hearing your part and often are surprised when you hear the accompaniment later. That's because when there's a lack of harmony, the brain will fill in with what it thinks it should be, but that is often not what the composer decided. So then when you hear it for the first time together it's a bit jarring.

Congrats on starting up flute again, though. Perhaps you can create your own flute music that you enjoy listening to smile

Not sure about the name. I've thought of changing mine just because it's so boring, but then no one would "know" me anymore.

I play the flute too, though I've been more obsessed with piano lately because I'm taking lessons. It's made me think that I could do more musically with the flute.

I was recently listening to a really fine violist playing unaccompanied, and I was struck by how musically complete the sound was. You got a sense of all the harmonic structure and movement of the piece, even though you were just hearing the single melodic line. That's real artistry. (Bach had something to do with it, I'm sure, but a lot comes from the player.)

My display name doesn't quite describe me anymore either. At the time, I thought I was only posting for purposes for a very quick piano teacher search. I decided to keep this display name anyway.
