What happens if you don't do your homework or if you drop out?

Well, if I stop posting, you'll know that the dog got me!
I signed up for a class from Spain that is taught in Spanish and I only understand about half of it!

Nothing happens at all. You can do however much or as little as you like with the course materials. You can stay enrolled in the course, or you can unenroll. It's perfectly free learning for you to use as you see fit.

Are there English subtitles available for the Spanish course videos?

Some courses are subtitled, but not the one I'm in. There is an English thread in the forums, but I might not use it much unless I totally lose the idea of what's going on.

I'm working on my Spanish this summer and it will be good linguistic input. I'm also all hooked up with La Pierna Rosetta, Netflix, and some native speakers at work.

I'm doing the Music Theory course starting in a few days. Any feedback on that course?

Nothing happens at all. I am ashamed to admit that I signed up for Jonathan Biss' awesome Beethoven class, attended all his lectures but didn't do any of the homework. I just didn't have the time. So I didn't get the certificate. No big deal. I still got something out of the class, and the best part, Coursera allowed me to download all the video lectures, so I still have them whenever I feel like watching them again. That alone is worth the price of admission... wait it's free.

I had no trouble signing up for this class, so I think they are not kicking me out of the university for not doing any work for the last course.

I don't think there is any shame in it at all 8 Octaves. I'm planning to not do the homework at all for my class in Spanish, and I'll probably only do enough music theory homework to not get totally lost.

This is worth doing. I took a Coursera course (it was on statistics, so I don't mention that at parties), and downloaded the video lectures, largely because watching them online was awkward as the streaming was intermittent and fitful. This made it easier to pop them on to a tablet so that I could work on them when, for example, making a train journey. I don't know how true it is in general with Coursera, but once the statistics course had finished, access to all downloadable material, lecture notes, video lectures, stopped. So if you hadn't downloaded the material, you couldn't re-visit any of it on the course web site. May be worth bearing in mind.

The Coursera courses are completely variable in terms of whether or not they stay open after the course ends, and, if they're going to close, how long they'll be open before closing. Whether or not to keep the course open is decided by the instructor offering the course, not by Coursera.

The only thing that seems to be constant is that the courses never tell you their policy in advance frown .

Thanks for the invite, PS 88. I'll take a look.

Edit: that's the one I had signed up for. I look forward to it.
