Hey,
I've been playing piano for 1 year now and am currently learning the second movement of Pathetique. Obviously since I'm an adult beginner this recording is far, far from perfect (also I recorded with a cellphone laying next to the piano so it might sound... weird) but I want some constructive criticism so that I can improve.
Here's a link: http://vocaroo.com/i/s0eXNvMHgeho (please lower the sound volume!!)
Thanks in advance

Very nice playing! In the future, you may want to set the phone down a bit further form the piano so the mic is not getting overpowered by the vibrations of the instrument.

You choose a good tempo, but I do think your ornaments sound rushed. Take some more time with them now that you know how the timing on the page is, now make them a part of the musical line.

I think the pedal should be a lot less overall, too. Perhaps try some direct pedaling in places like on the portato LH at 2:50, or flutter pedaling to lessen the build-up of pedal in long repeated RH notes like around 3:15. Some of the pedaling in the beginning section also gets a bit muddy, so may need some extra clearing. Listen while playing, paying attention to the clarity. Pedaling should be done for effect and in some cases to create legato where we cannot, but in Classical era music, clarity and less pedal is better.

I think there was some counting errors in the last 30 seconds or so, maybe take some time to actually count it out and make sure you don't add extra beats.

Lastly, I would love it if you could make the accompanying figures much less resonant. They're a bit too loud so then I have to sometimes search for the melody. You do this by both lessening the accompaniment and increasing the melody. I think in your case the volume of the melody is fine (it's hard to tell on the recording), but the accompaniment really needs to find the background. Areas that especially need help are when you have the melody sustaining a long note and your accompaniment keeps chugging along. The decay of the melody notes is very fast and each reiteration of the accompaniment chord obscures it to the point of losing the melody altogether. So you must strike that long melodic note a bit harder so it last, and work like the dickens to keep the repeated chords soft.

It's a beautiful piece and you've done some great work with it, now these things will make it even better! smile

Nice playing and I enjoyed it. I'm also trying to learn this piece now as it is one of my favorite pieces but I'm finding it really hard so I'm going reallllly slowly at it. Hope to be able to play it properly one day!

If you are looking for more different interpretations of the piece, one I enjoyed was the one by Yundi Li on Youtube, found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bbje2CU9Ltw Another nice one I liked was the one by Barenboim at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGq3-Fi_zQY

Enjoy!
