What would be an ideal song for a beginning pianist? Only learning the chords on the circle of fifth for the moment, but wants defintly to learn a real song. Is it too early to start with one of Tom Waits or Nick Cave? What are the easier song of both composers?

Thx, Johan

Go for it. Eventually you want to become what they call a "Five Tool Player": Sight reading, Improvising, Transposing, Composition, and Arranging. These skills all support and help to develop each other so you might as well start developing them from the start. Music theory and is the basis of each skill.

"Imagine it in all its primatic colorings, its counterpart in our souls - our souls that are great pianos whose strings, of honey and of steel, the divisions of the rainbow set twanging, loosing on the air great novels of adventure!" - William Carlos Williams

For a beginner? I would say put tunes that require the circle of fifths down the road a piece and start by learning I, IV, and V chord tunes like "Silent Night" or "Frere Jacque". Waits did "Waltzing Matilda" but put his stamp on the melody a bit ... there's a difference in the way his rendition beginning at 0.50 sounds:

...and the sound of this version:

Yea I would vote for waltzing Matilda or maybe "the Piano has Been Drinking".... For Cave... Hmmm. "Love Letter" is not too tough.

Well, i don't have the sheets of these songs mentioned, but i do have the paper of Nick Cave's "And No More Shall We Part". It sounds very doable, but heck, what are these awkward finger settings. pfff...
PS: Please tell me this is not that simple to retain my motivation :-)

that would be a great song to learn (and from my favorite Cave album). And remember... finger settings are just suggestions. You don't have to use them.

I've never tried to play any Nick Cave songs, and I don't have any of his sheet music, but "Into my arms" is such a lovely, slow ballad and sounds eminently playable.

...but mostly I wrote in this thread just to share my excitement that my family and I are going to see him play live with the Bad Seeds in Louisville in a couple of weeks! Can't wait! grin

If you can, please report back on what you tried and how you found it. I have the same 2 guys on my "I'd like to try" list. The songs I'm interested in are "Martha" or "Ol' 55" by Waits, and "People just ain't no good" by Cave. I've got the sheet music for them and tried a few bars of all of them and got quickly frustrated. I just can't move my hands around the keyboard smoothly enough yet I guess. I have not showed them to my teacher yet, but was also thinking maybe I can re-arrange them to focus more on single-key melodies or something to make them easier. But that is also beyond me.

So, yeah, looking forward to what you find.

Don

Same here, i guess 1/2 year of learning to play the piano is just not enough to play these kind of songs. But the day my teacher asks me what song i want to learn, it will be one of these :-) (or a Bill Evans song)
