I must admit to running hot and cold on the Garritan CFX. Has this link already been posted? Aside from demonstrations of wide dynamic range this is also the kind of music I like to judge a sample library by. The second extract starting at 1:04 (I'm guessing it's the Schumann from the video notes but I don't know it...anyone?) to me sounds a shade electronic, even toyish, in the upper (melody) register. I suppose it could be a youtube effect degrading the original but At $350 inc. shipping it's too risky.

dire tonic: It sounds sort of too clean and sterile to me, which might be the same thing you are noticing. I don't really like the typical concert piano sound much anyway though - boring. smile

Btw, I can hear artifacts in that link - sounds like interpolation noise to me. (I doubt that it's a problem with the library - more likely the poster did something wrong in the conversion to YouTube format or something)

Greg.

That's what I suspect also. Still, I'm looking forward to further revelations about this library. I think we've collectively reached a point where we're not going to swallow the advertising copy without a hefty pinch of salt...which is good if it helps to push the price down.

Here's Diverging Principles which part of a larger composition by David Sosnowski who was one of the beta testers for the Garritan Yamaha CFX. It's an mp3 from his site.

The actual Yamaha CFX Concert Grand is a bright sounding, loud piano intended for the concert stage.

fastlane, it seems you might have connections? Could you put in a request for something gentle by Chopin, e.g. either of the two Nocturnes op 62 would be nice....

No connections. David posted two of his works on the once great but now quiet Garritan Forum on Northernsounds.com where he is an inactive member. It's been pretty much on it's own and quiet since MakeMusic purchased Garritan. I've read a couple of very favorable reviews about the Garritan CFX on the forum and no negative ones.

Enthusiast: Thanks, and yes, I was aware of the site demos and had already heard them. (and I do NOT hear that artifact in those demos).

Btw, one reason I had high expectations for this CFX library was that I REALLY liked the sound in the "Yamaha Sessions" recordings of the CFX - I've just gone back and listened to a few seconds of one of those recordings, and I still like it a lot. I think it's a much more intimate closely mic'd sound. (and I know they used a microphone especially designed for pianos, too)

I like the sound in the short video on the Garritan site a lot, but is that the real thing, or the sample library?

Greg.
