Salamander v3 is a free sampled (SFZ) piano (*). I have rendered a midi file with sforzando (a free SFZ Player) and this is the result:

https://soundcloud.com/supertorpe/beethoven-op81a-n26

The MIDI File is the Sonata No. 26 in E-Flat Major, Op. 81a, "Les Adiex", First Movement played by Aristo Sham, the winner of the 2011 International Piano-e-Competition.

(*) Yamaha C5 Recorded @ 48khz24bit
16 Velocity layers Sampled in minor thirds from the lowest A.
Hammer noise releases chromatically sampled in only one layer.
String resonance releases in minor thirds in three layers.
Two AKG c414 disposed in an AB position ~12cm above the strings

The only file you need is "SalamanderGrandPianoV3_48khz24bit.tar.bz2"

Looks like an archive for Linux, is this a sample that can be used in Windows?

Yes, but previously you must decompress it.
Once installed sforzando, drag&drop the file "SalamanderGrandPianoV3Retuned.sfz" into it. Then you can render the midi file offline (Tools | Render Offline).

Thanks, the piano is simply amazing, better than several of my (paid) sowftware pianos. It has a major drawback for me however, too much sustain resonance. It there a was to reduce it?

Yes, the .sfz file is a text file and you can edit all the parameters, but I'm not familiar with it frown

You can read the specification here:

Thanks, well it seems a big time investment to try to understand how all this work and try to edit the file...
I discovered the file opens in the garritan aria that came with finale...
The sample seem to lack half pedaling but well for a free piano it's amazing. Just a pity this excessive sustain resonance. I'll keep on testing it however.
Thanks a lot for sharing!

The piano sounds great, but it really does sound as though the sustain pedal has been left down in the opening section.
I have the same trouble playing Piano e-competition midis through my Kawai CA63.
Does anybody know how to make them play back with proper pedalling?

On quick first impressions it's a pretty decent free piano. I've done a cubase logical edit on the Sonata .mid file to deal with the sustain problem - it's working fine here. Unless there's something else going on, salamander doesn't appear to switch off sustain unless it sees a zero. Values lower than 63, in that neighbourhood, don't work.

It sounds well sampled but maybe a bit thin? Perhaps a bit of body can be eq'ed back into it?
