The Bechstein used to record many of the 60's and 70's rock bands at Trident Studios sold last week for over $353,000US. I think I may have posted thius before, but here's a brief history of the piano:

19th November 2001
Up for auction on eBay is the Bechstein Grand Piano from Trident Studios used by many of the most influential recording artists of the 1960s and 1970s, including DAVID BOWIE, The Beatles, Elton John and many others.
The ebony finish, metal framed grand piano, serial number 44064, bracing number 11870, from Trident Studios, London. The piano was used on some of the most important recordings of the era, including, The Beatles 'White Album' and the single 'Hey Jude'; David Bowie 'Space Oddity', 'Hunky Dory', 'Ziggy Stardust' and 'Aladdin Sane'; George Harrison 'All Things Must Pass', Harry Nilsson 'Without You', Elton John 'Yellow Brick Road', 'Elton John', 'Single Man' and 'Blue Moves', all of Queen's albums up until 'Bohemian Rhapsody', Carly Simon 'You're So Vain', Mary Hopkin 'Those Were The Days', Supertramp 'Crime of the Century', four Genesis albums and two Peter Gabriel albums. Sold by catalogue only.
The piano was hired to Trident Studios and subsequently purchased from Jacques Samuel Pianos Ltd., London, and is accompanied by a letter confirming this signed by the Company's Director in 1993.
The lot is also accompanied by a transcript from an interview with Trident Engineer Ken Scott. In the interview he is asked If it 'is true that the white piano at Trident Studios used by Mick Ronson on Hunky Dory and Ziggy was the same piano used by The Beatles for 'Hey Jude' on the White Album?'
His response was: 'I have no idea where you go the impression that the Trident piano was white. But yes it was the same piano used on 'Hey Jude', the early Elton John albums, Nilsson, Carly Simon, Genesis and Supertramp amongst many others. That was one of Trident's claims to fame. THE piano sound. It was an amazing piano'.

I thought a Bluthner piano was used in the Hey Jude song?

Or maybe just the album? confused

If this was authentic, the only logical buyer for this piano would be Bechstein itself.

I don't think I will be bidding wink Love the claim about it surely being the most famous historical insrument of all time, given the number of 'hits' played on it... as opposed to what say - Chopin's Pleyel????

No, I'm saying Bechstein is missing one whale of an opportunity *not* to purchase this piano.

Shows you what's happening to our economy. Two years ago, it would be purchased for display at some hotel in Vegas or for the Elton John show.

And since we're on the subject, trivia fans, for whom did Paul McCartney write Hey Jude?

as Victor Borge used to say when asked what function the middle pedal serves... "the middle pedal is there to separate the other two"

When Liszt was 45 he wrote:

“I have deeply appreciated your exquisite
instruments and my respect is sincere, impartial, and unbiased. The reputation of Bösendorfer grand pianos is so well grounded and splendid that it would be very difficult indeed to improve it.”

Of course, he lived to 74, I think, so he could have changed his mind. wink

I always heard that he wrote it for John Lennon, encouraging him to pursue his relationship with Yoko.

Beatles Trivia smile

John and Cynhtia were breaking up at the time and Paul McCartney wrote "I thought as a friend of the family, I would motor out to Weybridge and tell them that everything was all right: to try and cheer them up, basically, and see how they were. I had about an hour's drive. I would always turn the radio off and try and make up songs, just in case... I started singing: 'Hey Jools - don't make it bad, take a sad song, and make it better...' It was optimistic, a hopeful message for Julian: 'Come on, man, your parents got divorced. I know you're not happy, but you'll be OK.'

Later on Jools was changed to Jude.

Re: the Beatles and pianos I thought they used a Bluthner upright and a Bosendorfer grand, but I can't find any documentation on what pianos they actually used.

Good for Beatles and good for Liszt.

I always thought Bechstein suited Listz´s music.
Apparently Beatles though Blüthner suited their music.
