Hey guys! Happy Easter! smile Just finished my rough draft of the 4th movement to my piano trio. This movement is titled "To Rule" and has a march theme to it. I really liked another movement, To Light. This one starts promising but gets bogged down in straight rhythms and the strings parts don't match the piano part in difficulty (they're much easier). Also, I'd be the first to admit that I enjoy adventurous harmonies and this piece doesn't have them, but the issue with this piece is the strings are just not doing much. The piano part has that nice scale a couple of times. I don't think the strings play anything faster than an eighth note. Another issue is what I like to think of as connective tissue, those are the parts that link sections. This piece slows down too much at these junctures. This is your opportunity to give the strings something more interesting to play. String players don't always like challenges, but this piece doesn't have any (for the string players).

I think you've got potential but this piece needs some serious rethinking. If it's about ruling then you have to be admirable. Leadership is a very interesting topic. What most people don't realize is the truth to the cliche that one leads by example. One could rule by fear, force and intimidation but I would hope no one would want to write music about such a thing. Otherwise one leads by example, inspiration and/or sacrifice. Anything less and no one will follow. Use that as inspiration for your piece and it will become very interesting.

This piece is interesting, the only thing that bothered me was the clear theme I was able to pick out did not come until about 1:50ish. I think that part should have come earlier and then you could have developed on that.
