First, welcome to PianoWorld. You may be too old to be a virtuoso concert piano player, but composition and music production, especially of the popular music variety, may still be open to you. Good luck!

Hatem, You're never too old to have fun. Enjoy!

Welcome to the forum. To answer the question, no you are not too old. Will it be easy, no it will not be easy. However, there are very few professions that I would rate as easy to get into these days.

If you don't have much money, there are some free online courses on Coursera.org. These are six week online courses on a wide variety of subjects. Some may be low level courses that may help you towards your goals.

There is also a ton of information on the Internet. I might suggest some music appreciation and history in addition to courses more directly related to your goals. These can be dry topics, but a person with an understanding of history, will likely be better equipped to be a professional composer.

One downside is that online courses and the Internet in general, can become a time drain. So pick and choose where you want to make your efforts. A few beginners fall into the pit of spending more time and energy on the Internet than at the piano bench, and their progress may suffer because of that choice.

If you ask the direct question of what to do given your goals? There is not an easy answer. A degree in composition would likely be a long, difficult, and expensive road for a true beginner starting at 19, and that degree doesn't guarantee anything as far as a career.

Definitely too late to be a classical virtuoso, but that is not your goal, so no worries.

It might be never too late to have fun, but you want to be a professional musician and make your living out of it. We are not talking a hobby here.

As you are looking into "modern classic", chill out, film... it won't be easy but it is not impossible if you have a good ear and are on the creative side. Many people simply cannot compose, it doesn't matter how well they can play. So these skills certainly don't go together, but you can develop what you already have. Check out the thread I left recently here about David Nevue, there are a couple of links in his website you might be interested to read, one specifically about composers.

As per making a lot of money.... who knows, but certainly if it comes I guess it will be very welcome! wink

No, you are not too old. You'll have to deal with an odd marketplace though. Producing that style of music cheaply, quickly and in quantity has become possible in recent years thanks to inexpensive technology. Lots of people make lots of reasonably polished pieces in that style and offer them for free use (just google "royalty free music" to see.)

So in order to get people to pay for what you make, you have to make something that's significantly more valuable -- artistically better and/or more useful to the buyer -- than what can be had for free.
