Hello,

I have been keeping an eye out over the last year or so for a decent used piano. I played as a child and would enjoy starting again, and we’d like to give our two young children a chance to learn as well. After several disappointments going the Craigslist route (misrepresentations that a technician pointed out to us), we have found a local dealer whom we like and trust.

Our original price goal was $1500 - $2000, and we were seeing 50+ year old pianos, or not-great manufacturers, like Wurlitzer. We were delighted to see that our dealer now has a Kawai C-107, a 43 inch console, for $2395 -- despite the higher price, it’s very tempting. The serial number says that it was made in Japan in 1978. It appears to be in very good condition. The dealer will give us a 5-year parts and labor warrantee, and a lifetime trade-up option at the purchase price.

I’ve done searching in these forum archives and elsewhere, and can’t find any info specific to the C-107. Was this the “edsel” of the Kawai product line? Or is it a reasonable model?

Many thanks for any advice you can provide.

Bloomie

The C-107 is a good solid model. Have a technician check it out. The price is not bad either.
Good Luck
John

Bloomie - I was in the same boat, was looking to spend up to $2000 on a good used acoustic piano. Was looking at a new Pearl River console for about $3000(made in China) I spoke with some people and a continual theme was to stay away from the Chinese pianos. I settled on a beautiful oak satin US made 1992 Baldwin Acrosonic in near perfect condition for $3000.
An awesome place outside Baltimore sells used pianos, they have plenty of uprights and consoles. Check their website out www.rickjonespianos.com

Stop buying things you can't afford....unless of course it's a piano.

We were in the market for a piano earlier this year with a 3-4K budget. I did find some decent new ones like Kawai and Brodman. In the end, we got a used Kawai US60 for a little over $3K. It is far more piano than what we could have bought new.

If there are places for good used pianos in your area, keep looking them over. Eventually, the right piano may come through the door. We have Piano World and Laabs in the TC. Piano World was going to get in some better Kawais for about $4.5K and we happened to find the same thing at Laabs for 2/3 the price. They tuned it, went over it and held it for us to look at before buying. They also promised to fix anything that went wrong after getting it home. We did have some issues and they took care of them.

After having this instrument for most of a year and recently tuned, I do not think we will ever have a need to replace it unless we wear it out.

I'm no expert on price (and a customer, not in the business) but if this piano is being bought from a dealer, HOPEFULLY it has been tuned plus had a little voicing and regulation touch-up. Presumably it will be delivered too in this price...maybe an in-home tuning? Then guaranteed for 5 years. All these are worth $500-600 easily.

So the buyer buying a $1800 piano and paying the rest for service costs and peace-of-mind in the transaction. This sounds more reasonable than $2400 for the 30yo console.

Thank you all for your helpful comments. We went back to purchase the Kawai, and for not much more (famous last words) there was a newly-arrived Yamaha M25 - 1985, excellent condition. It will be delivered this week, and we are delighted to be moving from the shopping phase to actually playing music! Thanks again.
