Very cool board. Tibbs shows it off nicely as usual.

Way, WAY too much synth stuff I'd never use, but the core/overall sound is excellent..at least listening through phones. Nice acoustic bass !

I'd like to know if there are already drum loop patterns built in (like on the RD-800) ..or do you have to create each one from scratch ? The drums themselves sound good too.

Jay ? or anyone ?

Thanks

From the manual:
The FA contains preset patterns that are suitable for intro, verse, fill, and ending.

I have it; it's a very nice board ! And , although wide, it's easy to transport. Plenty of rhythm and drum stuff by the way. J

Thanks guys. How are the swing and latin grooves (bossa, samba, etc) ? Are there quite a few to choose from ? I think GC just got one in, I can go scroll through the patterns and hear myself..but was just wondering beforehand. Thanks again.

Certainly is lighter then the RD800.

0:48 secs - that classic SN thin metallic clank at slightly higher velocities. Yuck. I couldn't be bothered to listen for more than few minutes because the whole thing is an assault on the ear drums with the cheesiest, most dated, cringe-worthy '90s synth sounds. These sounds were horrible back then and horrible now. Who actually wants these sounds?!

Other than that I'm sure it's a wonderful 'board!

Other than your first paragraph, what a wonderful and constructive post!

So, you judged the thousands of stock sounds available on the FA series within a few minutes? SN wasn't even available back in the 90s, so there was no "then" in many cases. Have you had a chance to examine the sounds available in the Axial database? The FA series are workstations and there are people who actually want capabilities centered around sound design and writing/producing music rather than pianos, EPs and organs. Perhaps it isn't suited to you, but if you can't find something good to do with a board that offers a multitude of SN sounds, effects and on-board sampling, I'd start your troubleshooting with user error.

Yes, I judged without listening all the way through. Shame on me.

I couldn't care less whether it's actually any good because I would never buy it. I have no interest in "capabilities centered around sound design and writing/producing".

So I agree with you, it isn't suited to me.

But those few seconds of metallic twanging was enough to remind me why I don't much like SN pianos. And the other sounds I heard made me cringe.

I like to be provocative now and again, especially when there's nothing on telly.

Steve, have you played the RD-800 ? Not usually a Roland fan, but on first play (with headphones) I liked it.

I'd have to haul my speakers and di/preamp into the music store, and then run the 800 through those to tell if all the good stuff I was hearing still holds up over the phones.

That first new Concert Grand is much better then the pianos in the 700NX. For long term, my first gut reaction is to go with the CP4 though..for what I do. Wish it had drum patterns like the CP5 though.. frown

Yup, there's certainly some horrible dated stuff on board in the presets, but there is so much to choose from and to tweak that you definitely don't have to bother about these sounds you don't like . Just select some of the stuff you DO like and go from there. There's enough very useful material in this machine. And there are different variations of the SN piano on board. Also very tweakable to your liking and very playable if you adjust the touch curve + velocity offset somewhat. I am not a big fan of factory demo sounds and demo sequences; usually they suck. You have to play around with an instrument yourself for a while to get the best impression of what you could do with it. So far, I like the FA . It certainly needs some added features, small fixes and tweaks in a future firmware update that will improve the board, but already it it's very useful. Had the FA 6 for a short while as second tier, but the keybed was so unplayable that I exchanged it for the fa08 right away. Don't forget it's still only around 16kg. If your more into pure AP, EP, organ stage pianos , try the MP7 ; I think that's a better match for you. Cherio, J

Got my first real chance to play the FA-08 today at an in store demo event in Barrie Ontario.

There's some Pianos on there I loved, and a few that I couldn't play for long. That's the beauty of a board with 2000+ sounds. You'll find some that you like.

As to a SuperNatural "clank", in several years of selling SuperNatural Based piano instruments, never have I heard anyone describe anything as a "clank".

To each their own I guess. I walked away from the FA-08 and went directly over to the RD800 and got back in my groove.

Is this the replacement for the old "Fantom" range?

Similar concept. i.e. It's a workstation with tons of very useful tones and features.

The Fantom X and G8 both had a few built in features that the FA series does not. However the FA Series is WAY less expensive than the Fantoms.
