So I was looking at Yamaha's new U1TA on their website and the technology on this thing looks pretty amazing. Just found out about it since I didn't get to attend NAMM this year (it was debuted there). Since im in the market for an upright, this would be great to have.. (only problem is I would have to buy new, which I don't like to do)..

any thoughts?

I don't understand a word of what they said,yet I still want one. My thoughts are "Buy It!"

Wasn't Schimmel doing something like this 20 yrs ago?

So its an acoustic, but it also has a dp built in, and uses the soundboard as a large speaker. Different.

Yes they were Dave. Today Schimmel offers the Twin Tone. This is a silent piano option with a digital piano (or any other) sound.

Here is my thought on this Yamaha. Speaker technology and digital systems change and do not last like a piano. I would rather keep the two separate. Midi trigger systems are relatively simple today and can be replaced over time.

If the rest of the system is integrated into the piano it limits options in the future.

My 2 cents,

PS
A transducer drives the soundboard to act as a speaker "cone" for instruments other than the acoustic piano that is built in.
It has a "silent piano" function.

Thought;
I wonder how the "upright piano'ness" of the soundboard affects whatever it plays as a DP.
Presumably these are samples and it has a "Grand" or two.
Hmmm, maybe a set of filters and EQ are a part of the preset ?

It isn't clear from the video (in conjunction with my POOR understanding of the language) how integrated the other instrument voices are - e.g. in a memory card such as an SDHC that is easily changeable/update-able, or if a user would have to replace the whole piece of musical furniture every time the manufacturer makes yet another revolutionary improvement on perfection (snarky comment).
It would be NICE if it could hook up to a tablet or cell phone for updates/upgrades/optional_instrument_purchases.

@R_B:

They don't talk about the possibility to update it in the video. They only say you can save a song as .wav-file on a usb-thumbdrive and that is supports MIDI format
It is essentially a Silent Piano where the speaker is the soundboard. So I'd guess it is as upgradeable as any Yamaha Silent Piano (and I don't know how much that is laugh ).

I think they may be positioned a little awkwardly if/when they discover bugs or want to release a "new and improved" version aka V2.0.

At a couple or three thousand I would want to NOT buy the whole "box" ever few years for updates/upgrades or new instruments.
.
At ~$16K I would avoid the whole product series - Ahh, I just did and it feels SO GOOD laugh

If I had that kind of money I would spend it on an acoustic, not a dp!

As far as upgrades to firmware. You could easily do it with the USB drive. MIDI sys-ex supports routines to open the eprom and load the software. New sounds could be done the same way. The only caveat is that the ability has to be programmed in and yamaha has to choose to develop a new features or new sound update.

I played the UTA1 at NAMM when i went to visit the Yamaha booth.

Loved the experience. Found it quite innovative, and thought it sounded fantastic when the acoustic upright and sampled grand sounds were combined. The only gotcha to me was of course, if the acoustic is out of tune, the combination wouldn't sound nearly as good anymore.

Just my $0.02.

I can imagine a scheme that would lock the sample's frequency to that of the strings.
I can IMAGINE it, but I didn't say I could IMPLEMENT it laugh
Probably not beyond Yamaha's ingenuity though...

It would be interesting to get the manual, most of them are online, to see if there is any update capability.
This one may not be up yet though.
