Although I already own two Kawais (one grand and one stage piano) which get quite a bit of use at home practicing concerto transcriptions for two pianos, I have been trying to find a third instrument so I can practice at my country house without moving the MP8 all the time. I did buy one just yesterday and, considering the low price I paid, I'm quite happy with my third Kawai. Is anyone on this forum familiar with this console, a PN220 ? Never heard of it before, seems an asian model, perhaps?

Also, I have a rather technical question for the more mechanically inclined on this forum. Can the spacer between each key and its sensor be replaced to sort of "even out" the keys and make the sensitivity (touch) also more even? Some of these little, gelly-like cushions have sort of melted and probably reached the end of their useful lives. I would really like to replace the whole 88 cushions and thus renovate the action, which is electronically as good as new. Are the contraptions available and if so, where?

Thanks for the help!

Claude

Hello Claude,

I believe the PN220 was a Japan-only model, launched in mid-'96.

A Japanese manual can be downloaded from the following URL:

Cheers,
James

Hey James, it's been so long! Thanx for the reply, it confirms what I believed. I still wonder how this piano got here in Montreal, but anyway it'll do its job fine...

But what about the spacers that I mentioned? Are kits available so these can be replaced? I should think that contemporary Kawai keybeds can be expected to share pretty much the same materials amongst different models? This is not the AWA keybed, but some short, plastic levers each with a small, swinging hammer at the end (for feel and weight) and the sensor underneath, with this little rectangular cushion between key lever and sensor. Aren't these little pads available anywhere? They are the only means of adjusting key evenness.

Many regards,

Claude

Hello Claude,

Given the age of the instrument, I very much doubt spare parts will still be available.

Kind regards,
James

That's damn old. Buy a new DP instead. Do not be fooled and amused with it's pure-wooden keys, all-around metal keybed, and etc. It's not a good piano with a very light touch. DP's hammers SHOULD BE SPRINGLESS. I guess that model uses spring....
Because you know what? I have an 80s Kawai DP lolololol!!!! I hate my keyboard (Kawai MR3000). It's a very old model here my friend.... Let's dream to upgrade.

I know it's hard to let go with all its all-around metal parts, wooden keys, and metal chassis! Compare nowadays it's all darn plastic!

plastic.plastic.plastic

But we have no choice......

I am planning to buy a Yamaha P-120 in the next few months. I hope I'll have one.
I will try to take pictures of a dismantled 80s Kawai of mine so I can help you and connect w/ you what the heck you are really talkin' about those pads, rectangular cushions, etc... you're talking about. smile

In fact, I actually know what you're talking all about. It's just exacly the same thing I guess.
