Just got word Steinway is going to start making their own digitals. Looks like they finally got tired of losing so many sales. Should be awesome! Press release link: http://bit.ly/Hzslo7

Wow, impressive! Looks like they're using an adapted acoustic piano action too...this could serious challenge the AvantGrands.
Cheers, James x

It is surprising really that they have taken so long to start competing in what is the biggest growth area in pianos. This is completely going to change the way the cards are dealt.
Roland HP 302 / Samson Graphite 49 / Akai EWI
Reaper / Native Instruments K9 ult / ESQL MOR2 Symph Orchestra & Choirs / Lucato & Parravicini , trumpets & saxes / Garritan CFX lite / Production Voices C7 & Steinway D compact
Focusrite Saffire 24 / W7, i7 4770, 16GB / MXL V67g / Yamaha HS7s / HD598

It is surprising really that they have taken so long to start competing in what is the biggest growth area in pianos. That's because "they" isn't who they used to be. Henry Steinway died in 2008 and within a year the company fired nearly a third of its employees. Last year a hedge fund bought the company for a half billion dollars. So surely the new management is behind the addition of digital.... if it ever arrives on a non April Fool's Day.

Odd how their first models appear to be trying to compete in the ultra-portable stage piano market. You'd have thought they'd want to produce something like the V-piano Grand, but it seems they're going after Casio.

It looks like they're using a Renner action (sans the damper mechanism). It will have an on-board Mac; which means we can load our own virtual pianos. yippee!

I wonder why they decided to go with only 44 keys? Maybe to keep the cost of the Renner action down by splitting it in half to make two DPs.

It appears to use 44 keys; however, if you look closer, you will notice that it's really 88 keys with a split point at the middle (notice the small hinges). This folding mechanism makes the piano more portable for gigging musicians. Steinway has definitely covered all the bases. Well done, Steinway!

In other news; Rolls-Royce announced today that they will be entering the moped market. "The iconic radiator grille presented a minor styling challenge, but we have overcome that", a spokesperson said.

Love how Steinway included the wireless feature on the interface. Push the button on the far left of the keyboard and you're automatically taken to the Piano World Forums! This way, whatever your issue with anything, you can instantly asked for help! And, to top it off, this feature can be routed to the expression pedal!

I wonder why they decided to go with only 44 keys? Well that's why it has 5 pedals. The outermost ones are for octave switching: you hold the left pedal to play notes below middle C, and the right one to play those above. With fast pieces can look like someone pedalling furiously on an exercise bike. And you can't really tell from the pics, but Steinway found in market trials that people didn't really like playing with their hands crossed over most of the time, so they came up with an innovative solution: the note order is actually reversed, so the high notes are on the left and low ones on the right. They admit it takes some getting used-to, but IMO it seems like a good trade-off.

There's a rumor that instead of R&D, Steinway will slap a Steinway logo to a Williams piano. Should be a big seller.
