Variation No.5 sorta nocturnish or something, not sure how to describe it.

All right, let's see. 22 variations done, it's possible that a few may be forthcoming from other contributors. Let's see what happens.

Very pretty.

We're almost there.

Let's set a deadline for the last two variations. How about this time tomorrow evening? If they aren't written by then, then we will write them. Sound good?

Okay but to be fair send all people who have responded to this thread (nikolas, larryz, ritzycat) a PM to let them know.

If so I have that tarantella almost ready to go.

I think you should send the PM. You're the coordinator.

Problem is that wouldn't make for a very substantial piece.
For me composing variations can be something of a streak thing. I have a lot of respect for those who contributed multiple variations. The best compositions usually come after the first four or five because that's when a composer starts to really extend their creative reach. I didn't reach much in my contribution because I was focusing on other musical endeavors and the time frame didn't allow me to write ten variations. Composing variations is an excellent exercise for composers of all levels, so no I don't think it's a good idea to limit individual contributions.

That wasn't the case with me, though. My best variations came at the beginning. laugh The fugue and such things.

I realize everyone is different, but your point actually supports my point to a degree. I believe most composers have a usual "bag of tricks" they'll use in writing variations. I call these the obvious ones. For me, as those easy ideas get used up I encountered mental resistance and needed to think harder and more "out of the box" to come up with good ideas for variations. At the same time I had more familiarity with the theme. In my experience this led to breakthroughs that led to a plethora of more interesting ideas.

We're starting to approach the deadline. At least we have four contributors to the project even if Larry and Ritzy don't get around to it. And there's always the next one.

Nikolas and larrzy both sent me a PM saying they're not planning on submitting anything. So we're at 22 now, 23 once ritzycat submits his, and 24 if no takers by two hours time and I submit this tarantella.

Yep.

Ritzycat, what's the word?

I don't mind giving him a bit.

Given that time is up, here's the 23rd: Whatever ritzycat posts will be 24th. If he doesn't post or if it goes on too long you just make the 24th Polyphonist. Everyone let me know if there are any harmonic errors in this, I think there might be a few.
