Well you have 10, I have 6, chopinlives has effectively 4 so that's 20, only 4 more needed. Yeah I'll hold off on the tarantella unless it looks like we're getting stalled, ritzycat and larryz look like they might want to contribute a bit. If it drags on without anybody making a variation in a while though I'm about 70% done with it and it sounds pretty good.

All right, here's my conytibution. I felt compelled to enhance the harmony, but just embellished the melody a bit.

Excellent. 4 contributors now, and 20 variations; 21 when we get confirmation of ChopinLives' #2.

I'm working on finishing the 2nd variation and I have 5th variation that I'm working out on the piano right now.

Awesome, almost there. Once ChopinLives is done with his 5th variation we'll only need 2 more. Larryz and ritzycat have both expressed that they might want to contribute so let's make sure to see if they want to and give them that chance before any of us make any other variations. If there aren't any other takers I might bust out this tarantella.

Why stop at 24, why not just keep going...lol

I suppose but we have to have an end at some point to be pratical and 24 is a nice number, used for variations done by Beethoven, Rachmaninoff etc. I mean we can always do this again in the future with another theme.

24 was the agreed-on quota. I think we ought to stick to it. And as S01 says, we can just start a new one as soon as this one is finished. laugh

It's going to be hard enough agreeing on an order for the 24 variations. Let's not make it harder by adding more. grin

You're literally just in time lol.

We're getting really close to 24. ChopinLives is currently creating variation 22. Ritzycat and larryz are supposedly working on one each (not confirmed, however), and with you that makes 25. I don't think it would be a catastrophe if it came down to that though.

Ha they completely forgot about it. No one followed up with it, I've been following this thread too much to worry about reminding them.

Next time we do this I say we do a strict limit aka one (or maybe two) variations per person maximum. And maybe 8 variations total.

What do you think will be the performance time of this piece? If they're 30 seconds on average it'd be at least 12 minutes. Who'll be the first to record it on youtube or something i wonder

Problem is that wouldn't make for a very substantial piece.

All right, let's see. 22 variations done, it's possible that a few may be forthcoming from other contributors. Let's see what happens.

Let's set a deadline for the last two variations. How about this time tomorrow evening? If they aren't written by then, then we will write them. Sound good?

Okay but to be fair send all people who have responded to this thread (nikolas, larryz, ritzycat) a PM to let them know.

If so I have that tarantella almost ready to go.

For me composing variations can be something of a streak thing. I have a lot of respect for those who contributed multiple variations. The best compositions usually come after the first four or five because that's when a composer starts to really extend their creative reach. I didn't reach much in my contribution because I was focusing on other musical endeavors and the time frame didn't allow me to write ten variations. Composing variations is an excellent exercise for composers of all levels, so no I don't think it's a good idea to limit individual contributions.
