Hi

Does anyone know whether pianos can be affected by timber wood decay in a property? For example, if the wooden doors in a property have timber wood decay (caused by fungi and moisture), would that decay spread to wooden structures of the piano?

I may be just over-worrying but thought I'd ask to see if anyone could enlighten me. Thanks!

Regards, Jibbers

Yes, and if it's that damp, also the strings will rust. Mold and fungus are health hazards. So, get outta there! Head for the hills!

A dark and damp piano interior is also like the Ritz for woodworm and other wood-boring species. I was once shown an upright with really bad woodworm, when one played a key it would break in half. I know uprights are sometimes criticised for poor répetition but really....

I wood(pun) presume that it is worse in solid lumber than in laminates (plywood) or MDF.

Just about non existent in carbon fiber or graphite parts though laugh

Yeah, I just HAD TO get that in - not that survival in high humidity environments or resistance to worms, rot and fungi is a major design goal for MOST piano manufacturers.

Isn't the Jungel & Vinne Piano Company doing rather well?

I've heard stories of pianos made with stainless steel strings for use on cruise ships and such corrosive environments -- never actually seen one, though.
