Listened the promo video... doesn't sound like revolution.

But only the playing experience will tell us, is it just the big marketing, as Yamaha used to be, or is it a real huge step forward.

Other than adding escapement is there any other difference between the GH3X and GH3 (such as shifting the fulcrum point deeper into the key, using different material other than thick metal wires for the hammer, extending the key length).

I have always been disappointed by the Clavinova action. It seems like they had a really good thing going the CLP990 action but then abandoned it.

DO some of you maybe know, why Yamaha is not happy with showing their action, while we can see Roland and Kawai models?

This appears to be a very good question as it is not clear as to whether samples only are being used with VRM and if true "88-key sampling" for each key has been implemented.

Here is the info on the new CLP-585 from the following website:

http://europe.yamaha.com/en/product...talpianos/clp_series/clp-585/?mode=model

And, in comparing the "specs" of the new CLP-585 to the CLP-480 (that I own) I only see the escapement simulation as having been added to the NW action although it has not been clearly spelled out if "88-key sampling" is being implemented in the "specs" other than giving the following descriptions:

Both of these superb pianos' Voices are featured in the Clavinova. Tuned to perfection by a highly experienced piano technician with the sound from each key sampled individually, Clavinova truly captures the unique tonal character of each of these outstanding instruments.

Another description is given here:

This phenomena is reproduced perfectly in the Clavinova through Virtual Resonance Modeling (VRM), which calculates the various states of the strings for each of the 88 notes on the keyboard from one instant to the next, allowing vivid, richly-varied expression that reflects the limitless number of factors inherent in playing the piano—such as the register and the number of keys pressed, the strength with which the keys are played and pedaling timing.

From what I read they do not list "88-key sampling" as a new "feature" or list it in the "specifications" but only describe the sound as being a result of the new "VRM" feature.

I will probably keep my CLP-480 without trading up as the the new CLP-585 does not have as many preset sounds as the CLP-480 (as I want to keep the acoustic guitar sounds) and only boasts a 180 watt system as compared to 200 watts in the CLP-480.

The actions are going to be the same (except for escapement simulation being added) so the question would be if the CLP-585 is going much of an improvement over the CLP-480?

Extra note:

I wanted to correct myself as I wasn't sure if the new CLP-585 had acoustic guitar presets as I found it does - as there are both "nylon" and "steel string" guitar sounds and this can be found in downloading the owner's manuals, here:

http://europe.yamaha.com/en/product...talpianos/clp_series/clp-585/?mode=model

Yes, the older CLP-990M from 2001 has a realistic and authentic weighted action not to be found in any of the later models.

Reading the brochure of the CLP-585 sounds like a cut and paste of the CLP-990's.. 13 years later and you'd think there would be some major advances in technology by now. The brochure should read. "We at Yamaha created in 2001 the CLP-990 and realized it was too advanced and would eat away at our regular acoustics. So we at Yamaha for the next 13 years dumbed down the CLP line without any advancements yet we marketed each one as if it did. Well, now it is time to go back in time and bring back 88 key sampling with no stretch sampling. Oh and we can now bring back a true natural grand action that can compete with Kawai's." On a side note, I hope from now on the next upgraded line will have more than 256 polyphony and the samples run into the over 30GB size so more nuanced sounds can be achieved.

What kind of music do you play that requires more than 256 notes sounding simultaneously? Agree, these are stereo samples so 256 polyphony is actually 128 notes sounding simultaneously. This basically means you can press all the keys on the keyboard at the same time and still have 40 notes left.

I agree with you they should improve the samples and make the connection between player and instrument even better.

I use the sustain pedal for quite a few songs with two to four instruments combined and believe me, the note drop-offs are quite noticeable when the polyphony is a combined 128 or less. I agree that if you don't use sustain, then a polyphony of 10 would be sufficient. 512 polyphony would be sufficient for my style of playing.

I agree in this case 128 may not be enough, but 256 is plenty.

256 per voice is plenty, however all we've gotten from the CVP series is 256 for everything. The CVP series by now should have 512 at the very least.
