Scott Ordway leads the orchestra in a program featuring Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 10 in E-flat for Two Pianos, with soloists Frank Glazer and James Parakilas. Also: Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 in E-minor, "From the New World," and Sibelius' "Andante Festivo."
Free, but tickets required, available through bit.ly/oacbates. FMI 207-786-6135 or olinarts@bates.edu.

Frank Glazer, Artist-in-Residence, before coming to Bates was Professor of Piano on the Artist Faculty of the Eastman School of Music. A concert pianist, he has performed throughout the world and played with leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Glazer gives frequent solo recitals on campus, as well as performances with the Bates College Orchestra and with students, faculty, and guest artists.

James Parakilas, a music scholar with a doctorate from Cornell University, teaches courses on music history and culture, music theory, and performance. He plays the piano, often in chamber groups with students and colleagues, and coaches student chamber groups. His scholarly publications include the books Ballads Without Words: Chopin and the Tradition of the Instrumental Ballade (Amadeus Press, 1992), Piano Roles: 300 Years of Life with the Piano (Yale University Press, 2000; paperback, 2002), and the textbook The Story of Opera (forthcoming from W. W. Norton). In 2010-2011, under a Phillips Faculty Research Fellowship, he studied recent research in psychology, neuroscience and other fields that is prompting new understandings of the nature of music.

We had a wonderful time at the concert Saturday night.

Here's a picture of us with the two piano soloists between us.
That's me on the left, next is Frank Glazer (99 year old Artist in Residence), James Parakilas (James L. Moody, Jr. Family Professor of Performing Arts, and author of Piano Roles), and Kathy.

I brought James' book which he graciously signed for us, Frank wanted to know where his book was I'll be sure to pick up a copy and bring it next time.

We had a wonderful evening, the Bates Orchestra did a great job, and we got to share it with our friends Terry (a long time member of our piano forums) and her husband Steve, and Kathleen Kienitz (another long time forums member).

After the concert we went back to Kathleen's house where she and her husband served us wine and snacks and made us all feel right at home. More on that later.
