The story starts again ...
I'm looking to schools to apply to a DMA in piano Performance or collaborative and I would like to ask you if you think it's possible to take a DMA in piano performance and in the same taking taking a degree in collaborative.

Thanks

No.

By definition, DMA is a specialist degree that requires your full attention. You have to pick a focus.

I wouldn't have thought so either. If someone did something like that, I think he'd wind up being sort of like just an "outstanding amateur" in each.

PLUS - you most likely would have opportunities to do collaborative work as part of your DMA program.

Yep, and keep in mind not all DMA programs are created equal.

Some collaborative DMAs are quite rigorous and provide ample opportunities to work at a professional level with extremely talented vocalists and instrumentalists. There is coursework dedicated to chamber and opera literature, including languages and diction classes. Often, one further specializes in an particular area - opera coaching, string chamber music, woodwind repertoire, song rep, etc...

Other collaborative DMAs offer no special opportunities or courses that you couldn't get in the performance program, and you basically end up being a part-time staff accompanist for three years working with students of variable quality.

For example, I think North Carolina GReensboro requires that their DMA students take a minor simultaneous. Is that normal in other schools?
