I'm looking to get a used piano and these are the two I'm thinking about. They both look great and have wonderful action and sound. My concern is price and age. The KG-1 is satin walnut and around $6k and the KG-2C is rosewood and around $8k. I've seen other rosewood KG-2's of similar age for $10-12k. Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Hello and welcome to Piano World!

If you have tried both pianos and you like them then that is the first important step in choosing one of them.

It is difficult to speculate on an appropriate price as you would need to discuss this with an independent technician who would need to check both pianos before you make your final decision. However, I would venture to say that both instruments seem fairly priced.

The KG-2C is a 40 year old piano, but the younger KG-1 is a shorter grand piano. It is general rule that longer grand pianos are preferable to shorter ones.

All the very best for your decision.

Robert.

All things being equal, I've far preferred the KG2 when I recall both models.

Thank you, Robert 45 and terminaldegree! I too prefer the KG-2. Besides being a beautiful piano, it sounds so wonderful. I appreciate your responses and input.

Hi and welcome to Piano World!

I have an older Howard 5'10" made by Kawai (basically a kawai model 550/KG2). I like it a lot. It has a very nice tone (particularily in the treble section) and a medium touch.

If you could negotiate a better price on the KG2, it would be a nice instrument (if it is in good condition). Either way, I'd go the extra mile and have it inspected by a qualified piano tech before purchase.

Good luck!

Rick

My son and I ended up with a 1971 KG-5. At 6'8", it is big in our living room and the sound is huge, easily traveling throughout our ranch house.

The age of the KG-2 you are looking at is comparable. The action of our KG-5 needs regulation, in my opinion, at this point. [It actually isn't bad but I'm picky and like to play softly.] The tech thought he could really improve matters by taking out the keyboard and regulating it up and down. Cost around $400. It would him a couple of weeks.

The bass strings on the KG-5 are a little rusty and I am hearing some muddy run-together (lack of clarity) in the bass. I think the KG-5 is due for re-stringing. Another $2000.

So, keep that in mind if you get the older instrument. It may be worth it though!

I do believe that the KGs were/are fine instruments. Very sturdy and well designed. Nice pure sound. I like mine a lot, even with the faults.

Thank you all. Today I decided to go new and purchased Kawai GE-30 for an excellent price. Not 5'10" and better sound than some of the reviewers are posting. Then again, perhaps I just like that tone.

Dear OCbeginner,
Congratulations on choosing your new Kawai GE-30! A new instrument should give you years and years of a trouble free piano. It is a very fine small grand piano.

All the very best for your enjoyment of your new piano.

Robert.

Robert and David,
Thank you for the support and encouragement! I appreciate it. FYI, satin black and delivery is this Saturday. Comes in the box so my home will be where it first acclimates. Pretty exciting and I might have forgotten to take pictures. Good idea, David.
Cheers!
Jim
