Hello everyone!

I am considering buying a used piano.

The first piano I saw is a Kawai 803-F made in 1983. So it is 31 years old now. The touch of the keys is still solid, except one key that has a clicking sound. This piano has not been played very often, according to the seller, maybe once a week or several weeks. The price is $1600.

The second one is a Kawai 706-T, produced around 1985. I have not seen the piano yet. From the picture I can see that the groove on the hammer is somewhat deeper than the 803-F I saw. It is probably played more often. Seller is asking for $1500.

Does anyone know these two models? Considering the similar age and price, which one looks better?

Thank you in advance!

Hi Alexanderxcy,
Welcome to Piano World! I am not familiar with either model of the Kawai vertical pianos you are considering.

The value of a used piano depends so much on its condition. Before making a purchase you should have the piano you prefer checked by a technician. Kawai pianos are robust instruments and the company established its fine reputation on pianos built during those years.

There will be deterioration on any piano of that age despite the amount of use and a pre-purchase technical check will alert you should there be any serious issue with the instrument.

A single clicking note is probably a minor adjustment matter.

As a piano is a musical instrument you should choose the piano which has the better sound. If you do not play, ask someone else to play it for you.

Good luck with your decision!

Robert.

Hi alexanderxcy:

Having sold many 803 model Kawai pianos, and 706 model Kawai pianos, I can unequivocally recommend the 803 over the 706.

The 706 series of Kawai pianos were not as substantial an instrument as the 803 series. Primary differences were in the hammers (803 was substantially better) and construction quality (soundbaord, cabinet, action components). Also, the 803 was built in Japan, and the 706 was a less expensive series of consoles built in Kawai's US assembly plant in North Carolina, much like the Indonesian pianos they build today.

The 803 has a bigger sound board and longer string length. It also has a deeper sound and more robust bass. I wouldn't worry too much about a clicking key as that is probably minor and easily repaired.

That being said, DO NOT buy either piano without first having a qualified technician examine it. Better to spend $100 and be sure of the structural integrity than to throw away money on an instrument that might not be serviceable.

I'd go see what the deals are with a new Kawai K series that's being replaced with the K-X00 line. You might be able to get a brand new K3 (48") for not that much more. Remember to consider all costs of buying used from a private seller.

Can you really get a new Kawai for that sort of money? I am amazed.
