How can I upload Widor's famous Tocatta? The only MID files available have an unacceptable quality. Can I somehow use an excellent MP3 file I have? How to convert/upload?

You can't. The Ydp-142 supports only MIDI files. There exists a WAV to MP3 converter (Intelliscore Polyphonic WAV to MIDI Converter), but I don't think, it could handle complexe soundtracks (this would mean differentiate and recognize each notes). I have never tried it.

Thanks Frdric, but can you tell me why the Demo Songs (10 of them), have such a high quality? I can't believe that they stem from Midi files.

In short you are mistaking MIDI files for music files - the MIDI files are just instructions for the piano to play its own sounds (simply put) so the quality of the output will be that of your piano. MIDI is a full professional standard...

MP3 files are (compressed) music recordings. Just audio.

I would like to know, however, the ins and outs of getting the YDP 142 to play piano midi files to accompany me on the guitar...

@Boblalux: Jason68 is right... When you play MIDI files on a PC with the default application, Windows use a 3Mb file which contains samples of 128 instruments. The quality can't be there. If you use (for example) Ivory II American Concert D, the same MIDI file will be rendered using 45000Mb of files which contain samples of 1 instrument... The quality is not the same wink

There could be three means :

1/ Using a sequencer, a software which play MIDI files by just sending MIDI events to the piano. Anvil Studio is a free program (0$), you just have to pay for some advanced functions (not required to play MIDI on an external instrument).

2/ Using Yamaha Musicsoft downloader (also free) to transfer the MIDI file to the piano, then you play it from the piano memory. (Note: I don't know if this software is compatible with the YDP-142... it is in the http://www.yamahamusicsoft.com/en/go/musicsoftdownloader page, but my CLP150 is also listed but is not recognized).

3/ If the second option doesn't work, you may try to record in the piano memory the MIDI file played by a sequencer (you select record on the piano, play on the sequancer, wait for the file to be played, stop the recording on the piano)... Afterward you don't need the PC anymore (it does work on my Yamaha... but I am not sure all Yamaha DPs record their USB-IN port)

In any case, you need a USB cable and the Yamaha driver.
