Though most people have now pretty much forgotten Edward MacDowell, he has composed a number of piano suites which have fairy-tale and legend pieces in the thematic mix. If you want to get a little more obscure, Arthur Farwell has written some piano music based on various Native American myths and legends.

Aside from the piano music and Peer Gynt, Grieg also wrote some beautiful songs which are full of mythology.

For example, "The Mountain Thrall" (Bergtekne) recounts the story of a man who is lured into the woods by some sort of female supernatural creatures (depending on the translation, either "the daughters of the mountain", "elven maidens", "trolls"...). As he dances with them, he realizes that he'll never be able to really feel at home, but now that he's lured into the woods, he'll never escape, and is forced to wander forever. He wrote a version for voice and piano, in addition to the original for voice, two horns, and string orchestra.

Another fantastic song cycle is Grieg's "Mountain Maiden" (Haugtussa), which is also full of magical creatures and events. Grieg actually wanted to write a Haugtussa opera, but it never worked out for a variety of reasons.

Another amazing song by Grieg is "By a Southern Convent", for alto and soprano singers, choir, and full orchestra -- I don't know if Grieg made a version for piano instead of orchestra. But either way, you should listen to it. smile There are two singers. The alto knocks on the door of a convent, demanding to be let in; the soprano (head of the convent) keeps asking her for more information about who she is. Eventually, the alto reveals that she had witnessed her father being murdered by the man who raped her, but then she fell in love with her rapist, and now, guilt-ridden, she seeks repentance. As I recall, that's also based on a legend.

Lastly, here's a brief, interesting essay about Grieg's depictions of supernatural creatures: http://www.griegsociety.org/default.asp?kat=1037&id=4970&sp=1

Some little known Jewish pieces from the early 20th century:

Lazare Saminsky - "Hebrew Fairy Tale" for solo piano

Joseph Achron - "In a kleyner shtibele" for voice and piano, with yours truly at the piano. I really can't figure out the history of this tune/text. Achron called it a Yiddish folksong. But I found another Yiddish song with the same melody but completely different words. And there's also a Russian children's song/dance with very similar words (but I never learned the melody for the Russian version, just the words and dance). Here's an English translation of the Yiddish lyrics in Achron's version:

Quote
In a little house,
There lived a little Jewish lady
With her 7 little children.
They were also so strange!

With such hands,
With such feet... beards... backs... sides... etc, etc, etc.

They don't eat anything.
They don't drink anything.
They just jump and dance
And sing little songs
About wizards and witches,
About dragons and Og the King of Bashan.

Let's play together, children.
Let's dance together, children.
Let's sing together, children:
What? A little song!

Also, Moshe Milner's "Agada" (Legend) for solo piano, and Joseph Achron's "Agada" (Legend) for violin and piano. You can find both scores for free at this online archive I helped to make:

Send me a PM if you want sheet music for the Saminsky "Fairy Tale" or the Achron song.
