He sounds like a fascinating man. Does anyone know if there are any good biographies about him?

Best regards,

Deborah

Ah, I love it when Jewish musicians go on a tribal roots kick.

Itzhak Perlman's klezmer cd was just full of fun.

If this ends up as a CD I know what I'm getting my mom for her birthday: A big brisket and a Kissin cd. smile

There is this interview where the interviewer interviews him in Yiddish about his life. He is fluent! Very impressive. Next time I go visit israel I will time it so I can watch him play there. That will be epic.

If anyone has pianojerome's email I know he'd appreciate hearing about this. I sent him a PM but he almost never comes here anymore.

He hasn't been around for ages and was a wonderful contributor. I hope he sees this and comments on it.

Best regards,

Deborah

Thanks for the PM; I'm really excited about this, and I wish that I would have been able to be there. This repertoire has been a passion of mine for the last 5 or 6 years, so I'm thrilled that Kissin has taken an interest in it. (Aside from music, Yiddish is also a strong interest, so I'm excited about the poetry, too.)

It's amazing how the reviews all focus on different things:

1. This one from the Washington Post notes that although his performance was extremely unusual, both in terms of the repertoire and the recitation of poetry, he wasn't doing it for the sake of challenging the status quo. Rather, he was simply expressing himself.

2. This one devotes a paragraph for each composition, describing the music and historical context.

3. The one in Commentary presents the performance in the context of the Holocaust and Zionism.

4. This blog post was the only one that really critiqued each composition, drawing connections to Chopin, Satie, Prokofiev, Debussy, and others.

Of course, all the reviewers were astounded by the inclusion of poetry, which is very unusual for pianists. (The Washington Post review notes that Brendel and a few others had done this on occasion, but it's still very rare, in any language.)

I'm hoping that Kissin will continue to explore this wonderful, if largely forgotten/unknown repertoire. I see that he's planning on performing these same works (Milner, Veprik, and Krein) at the Verbier Festival this summer; he also performed the Milner in New York last year. Hopefully, this is only the beginning!

If you're interested, you might also like this long article that was posted before the concert.

Here's the interview:

And here's a promotional video for his first album of Yiddish poetry:

In recent years (though he mentions his childhood interests in that interview), he has really taken a strong interest in his Jewish identity: he learned Yiddish, recorded two albums of Yiddish poetry, became an Israeli citizen, developed a relationship with the major Yiddish newspaper "Forvertz/Forward", and has begun to perform "Jewish" classical piano music. His fan site is full of Israeli news reports and content, which he himself asks the site's administrator to post; in his interviews, he expresses a passionate political solidarity with Israel and a deep connection to the Jewish people. He recently wrote and published two of his own Yiddish poems, including one inspired by Schubert's Impromptu No. 4 (Op. 90?).

When I was in high school, Kissin was one of my idols - as a pianist. Now I am even more intrigued, not only by his growing Jewish identity, but by how this manifests in his career. A whole new chapter is opening up in his life/career, and it's absolutely fascinating (and really exciting).
