The Closing Ceremony is on right now - with Rach 2 being performed in the middle of the stadium by Matsuev. Do watch!

If you can access BBC iPlayer, you'll be able to watch it again soon.

I love the Russians' use of culture (and they certainly have a lot of it) in their ceremony - Moussorgsky, Rachmaninov, Rimsky-Korsakov, Shostakovich...a pity they can't throw in Scriabin's Le Poème de l'extase, or even Prometheus with the Luce included.... grin

But there's still two hours to go....

Not only musical culture, but also tributes to literature - Tolstoy, Solzhenitsyn, and Dostoyevsky, and painting with an odd scenario with images/concepts from Chagall's work. (It was news to me that Chagall was Russian as well as French! -Live and learn).

And to think that the first great Russian composers were born in the 19th century!

Their intended audience hasn't heard Rachmaninoff a bajillion times, and even if I have, I still like it. I think their choice makes sense.

Tchaikovsky was a surprise though. Ya know, since he's so fabulous.

Every day we are afforded a new chance. The problem with life is not that you run out of chances. In the end, what you run out of are days.
