Based on Mark C's recommendation, I am reposting this wonderful Ondine, now with a new and improved thread title!

Cool! cool

As I mentioned over there, I had the privilege and pleasure to get to know him a bit through the amateur competitions. He's a special and splendid performer, and this performance here is an example. I must admit I'm biased toward him because of how gracious and giving he was toward us amateurs, but heck, personality counts. smile

Mark,

When you get a few more posts under your belt, you will probably have a better idea of how things work around here. smile

Repeated listening to this performance really rewards. Eric is doing some very subtle playing here. The timing of the climax is so right, and different from what one normally hears. I know Eric is very influenced by old recordings of players from the 20s and 30s, and I always get the feeling his playing is from that time, in the best sense.

Thanks for sharing this, Keith! Eric Himy put out an entire album of Ravel about 10-15 years ago or so; and, as far as I understand, he's a pretty significant name among those who especially gravitate to French solo piano music, and Ravel in particular. I sat in on a couple of his Master Classes in the Washington Amateur events 10-12 years back, and agree with Mark that he always had both incisive and detailed commentary on the works in question, with specific and clear directives for improvement. One bit of trivia: Lowell Liebermann wrote his "Gargoyles" -- one of the very few contemporary solo piano works that are programmed -- for a young Eric Himy, who premiered it in the late '80's (if I recall). Personally, I love his elegant touch and acute attention to various coloristic possibilities. Again, thanks for sharing!

I had forgotten that Liebermann wrote Gargoyles for Eric. Cool. I couldn't find a video of Eric playing it unfortunately, but there are some other nice performances including an excellent one by Yuja Wang.

Of course this is my favorite piece of music on Earth, so I must comment.

Really wonderful performance, great tone throughout, fantastic tempo.

Many players, including famous names, rush through the climax and it ruins the piece for me. It must be played to bring out the top melody at a reasonable tempo, and I think he does a great job in this performance.

(Alexander Toradze plays my favorite version of Ondine, the climax is perfection)
