Georgia's in the midst of an ice storm. My power went out about 6AM and will probably be out for a long time. Phone line and DSL still work (for now), and I have a generator that can power the kitchen, so I am still online - until the generator runs out of gas.

The good news? My 1927 Bechstein Model L needs no power!

I hope your piano sits right next to a big window so you can experience the glorious rain while you play. (or hail :D)

Not a good day for the trees of Georgia, I'm afraid. Best of luck Sam. Stay warm and practice lots. Hope you get your power back soon.

I was just reading about this yesterday! Be safe, Sam, and keep us posted. Wow, what a mess.

Unfortunately my digital does need power! It's still on as of now but I'm definitely not counting on having it for very long. I hope they get you fixed up soon and stay safe Sam S

The news from Georgia is scary. Stay safe and warm and try not to go out unless absolutely necessary.

A 1927 Bechstein..... do you have any kerosene lamps? Sounds idyllic!

Now the DSL is out, so I just have a smart phone. 9 hours and counting. I have one of those LED music stand lamps that runs on batteries so no excuse not to practice!

We`ve had horrendous weather (rain mainly) in the S of the country. Where I live, it`s been fine and sunny.

Until now . . . . .

I think everybody in our street will be hoping they don't hear that big crash . . . .

Portland, OR had been shut down for almost a week by snow and ice storms (today is our first day of full melt), but the weather has been so crazy everywhere else that our mess was no news at all.

I hope the majority of us are staying safe and warm, so we can send best wishes all who are stranded by the weather, or cut off from power, heat, or shocked internet.

Please step aside. You're standing in your own way.

It's been raining cats and dogs here in central Florida. Power and network off and on. We're OK at the moment. Nothing like what you're going through Sam. And nothing like the 3 hurricanes that hit us a few weeks after we moved here in 2004.

Hang in there Sam!

Sam, come on over. Hop on a plane and avoid that snow and frozen ice nonsense altogether. I just checked the weather here in Phoenix and they are forecasting near 90 degrees on Saturday.

Today I'm replacing the water pump impeller on my outboard engine to take the boat out. Melt those snowy sights with visions of the beach and bikinis my friend.

Hmmm snow and ice, as much as I'd like some snow... that storm seems a bit much! stay safe and practice, Sam smile

@peter

Yes, rain constantly... it just doesn't seem to want to stop!
I've been quite fortunate to be honest, I live fairly high up on the south east coast in Hastings. as for the west, I cannot begin to imagine what difficulties they are going through (I have seen a few valleys flooded here too).

24 hours now. Still not as bad as it could be. Used about half my gas for the generator and half my firewood. Biggest challenge is keeping my wife happy. If she's not happy, no one's happy. Just kidding, she's been great!

Good thing I got my recital submission in already.

Hey, Sam! Thanks for the report! I wondered on and off yesterday how it was going.

So, have you moved the refrigerator contents out to the back porch yet?

And to those in the UK - hm. Stay dry.

Power's back! 30 hours - not too bad. Of course, what made it come back was the fact that I made a trip to the gas station to buy more gas for the generator.

70*-80* in the winter [currently 84*,sunny, low humidity]
70*-80* in the summer [Sunny, low humidity]

Phoenix = winter
Flagstaff = summer

Less than 2 hour drive between the two locations.

You now have two options:

1.) Hate me
2.) Move

You can live in absolutely gorgeous weather year round if you choose to. It doesn't need to cost much either as the housing market in Arizona is still a little below 'value'.

There are very few places in our country where you can pull this off as you must have a very high mountain [elevation = cool weather] right next to a desert [for the warm winter temps].

If you decide to move, contact me and I'll help you with it the best I can. If not, well don't blame me as their is another option.

And remember, you only go through life once. The time that goes by will never be regained. for this reason, I put an extremely high value on 'time'.

This is the wisest thing I've ever heard you say, super-hunky. And it is so true. I don't think I could live in one of those places where you have to commute 1 hr+ to and from work.

Glad you hear your power is back, Sam. thumb

Kentucky is supposed to get another 1-3 inches of snow tomorrow, yuck. But next Friday: the forecast is for--get this--the mid 60s! yippie

It's been sitting at around 35 degrees (95 Fahrenheit) for the last couple of months here in Perth. I would trade this for stormy weather any day of the week.

I live in Michigan and love the 4 season weather extremes.

I have spent quite a bit of time in the south and what a lot of people from up here don't understand is that they don't just get snow which is easy to drive on. They get solid ice which is virtually impossible to drive, or even walk on.

We were stuck in Alabama once on our way north from Florida and experienced the ice first hand. We spent a day and a half in our car eating oranges.

We have 6 and 7 foot drifts right now but the roads are plowed and the snow is not a problem getting around on. Plus, we have not lost power all winter.

Good luck folks, not much fun.

I'm glad your power is back Sam. I'm a Minneaota native. I've lived in the Washington D.C. area briefly and have had direct experience with the conditions you are dealing with.

Right now the conditions in Minnesota are similar to what Roger described for Michigan. I must admit I'm getting tired of the snow shoveling and cold weather. However, I also know it is much better than the challenges you have ice storms, etc.

I hope you are quickly getting back to normal with a speedy recovery from that mess!

30 hours without power is nothing in the grand scheme of things. Back when hurricane Hugo came through SC my brother was without power for a week. At least he still had a house, although part of the roof was gone.

And then there are the people that live in tornado alley. Yikes!

So yeah, an ice storm once every few years doesn't seem so bad when you think about it.

We got it behind us yesterday ... some patches of ice were like someone made a few passes over it with a Zamboni. Huge crash on the Mississippi River bridge shut it but we made it to Biloxi.

Hang in there Sam.

Would 3 1/2 hours round commuting every day be acceptable? By train so that at least I could read/watch/work something during commuting. I had that pleasure for almost 3 years, last one and a half while waiting for somebody to buy my house!

1 hour per way is almost nothing for London.... but yes I wish I had made a better use of all that time spent in stations and trains!

Sam S, happy to hear that your power is back. For you and for so many people here, there and in so many other parts of the world it must be really frightening to see how impotent we are with weather and floods. Not an experience I'll be happy to have in my life.

I live in North Dakota.
Our power tends to go out when the ice accumulates on lines in late winter, then SNAP! Outages in summer are common.

For a few years I struggled with digital pianos... and now have an 1899 Bechstein V.

Problem solved. Viva analog!

We should form a club - The Old Piano Owners Club - OPOC. Not old owners, but old pianos, although I qualify as an old owner. You can only join if your piano is older than you are!
