if a particular dealer is reputable if I am not allowed to give the name of the company in my post? I really would like to check out their rebuilt Steinway pianos, but, normally when I plan to expend large sums of money, I seek out other people's recommendations. I'm not a technician, so I would really have no idea if the rebuilding was done professionally and well. Seems we aren't allowed to ask that here, correct?

Other people have asked about rebuilders or rebuilding shops in the past. It doesn't seem any different than discussing the quality of pianos.

I never thought it was restricted.

Is there anything about a "Hey, does anyone know anything about ......?"

(It'll keep the techs on their toes!)

There is no problem with discussing a dealer. The only issue is if somebody posts something that is untruthful. As long as people stick to the truth, it should be fine - although if somebody has a particularly contentious issue to raise, they might choose to send a PM.

Good advice, ando.

First of all, hire a technician to check it out!
Second, it should be possible to get local information to find out the reputation - ask music teachers, local piano tecnicians, etc.
Finally, ask the dealer for a list of satisfied clients. It is a good idea to look at past work and play some rebuilds.
hope this helps.

Juicy gossip is hardly of interest.

If someone asks about a specific rebuilder, honest answers should and could be posted. Pro and/or Con.

If someone is looking for a rebuilder, many of us have solid information to make a recommendation.

My suggestion would be to ask for opinions via PM.

Some people may not want to be totally upfront if they know many other people, including the dealer, can read their posts. This would normally be the case if there is something negative to say. IMO it's also possible that someone who buys from a particular dealer may be biased toward the dealer because everyone wants to think they've made a good choice. OTOH it doesn't hurt to ask as long as one doesn't take one person's opinion as the ultimate truth.

Why not name the dealer here and ask for replies by PM?

No one can say anything unless we know who you are asking about!

You could also look for the dealer on Piano World by doing a search for the name. That might turn up posts by or about the dealer.

Thanks, everyone! I am interested and very tempted to visit Lindeblad pianos. Their prices are very reasonable for rebuilt Steinways. I cannot afford a new Steinway, and attempts to buy privately are always disappointing. If anyone has had experiences that they prefer not to post, please feel free to PM me.

Rank Piano, the first thing I did was google Lindeblad and then searched on PW (couldn't find anything on PW).

CR,

Lindeblad advertises on Piano World! Just click on their ad on the right side of this page. They are a respected rebuilding shop.

Snowing? I'm not sure, let me go up to the attic and I'll open the hatch and let you know. If you don't hear back, just call 911-DOG-SLED.

Good advice. I've seen this sort of question asked before. If someone is uncomfortable posting their honest opinion, then a PM is appropriate.

My search for Lindeblad (in the Search bar at the top left of every page) on PW returned

"About 883,000 results (0.35 seconds)"

Plenty of reading there....
