Hi everybody!

I'm wondering if Arthur Rubinstein ever recorded Chopin's nocturne No. 20 in C-sharp minor (Op. posth). I couldn't find any version on the internet (browsing his CDs as well as Youtube). It's a bit strange to me that he (as one the best Chopin interpreters) doesn't have a recording of such famous piece. Anybody has seen a version?

I've never come across it, and if he didn't record it (or even play it at all), it wouldn't be a surprise. I think this piece wasn't nearly so popular till pretty recently -- I mean, like the last 30 years or so, but when you're 'a certain age,' 30 years is pretty recent. ha

The Nocturne books didn't even used to include it -- they only went up to #19. I was only very dimly aware of the piece, having seen it in an obscure volume or two and having noodles through it a little, but never having heard it -- until I heard a VIOLIST play an arrangement of it, in 1984. It was a total novelty to me, and I then did right away learn the piece.

But I wouldn't expect to find recordings of it by any of the old-time pianists. If I did, it would be a surprise.

(Edit) ....and nobody asked me grin ....but I found a recording of the piece by that very violist on youtube....

Rubinstein did not record any of the posthumously published Nocturnes, with the exception of the Nocturne in E minor, Op. 72.

The composers want performers be imaginative, in the direction of their thinking--not just robots, who execute orders.

Mark_C, you're right. I haven't seen many recordings of this piece by old-time pianists. The only one I remember now is Arrau. In my opinion, Ashkenazy has by far the best rendition, but he is considered young for your age laugh

By the way, viola version you shared is awesome! Thanks smile
