Dear Powers That Be,

One of the most confusing, and often used, feature of Piano World is the Photo Uploader.

However, where to find it and how to use it is one of the many mysteries in our enjoyable participation at PW.

Is it possible to add a Photo Uploader button at the top of each forum along with "Forum List - My Stuff - etc?" Clear and simplified instructions would also be helpful.

Members - Please add your comments or suggestions.

Respectfully,

Marty in Minnesota

I would be happy if they used git, cvs, or svn; that way, next time they 'forget to make a backup' it is not a problem.......

Hi Marty,

I'm not Frank, but I will chime in until he see's this thread...

You are right in a sense, that uploading pictures to PW can be a challenge, if you've never done it before. Uploading the digital pictures to the PW site is not so much a challenge as embedding them into a thread or post. Here is the picture upload page with instructions...
http://www.pianoworld.com/Uploads/fileuploader2.html

I don't think the instructions there address embedding a photo into the thread/post screen/window. But, once you figure out what the little icons at the top of the full-screen window are for, it is not too bad.

I’m not really an IT person, but I will help if I can…

First, a photo has to be hosted on a website and have an “http” web address to be embedded into a thread/post. Frank prefers that we use the PW photo web hosting site, for various reasons. Once the photo is uploaded to PW, the member will get an email with the web page where the photo is hosted… click on the address and the photo will appear… (just the picture, nothing else). Next, right click on the photo and a drop-down box will appear… on the drop-down window, left click “properties”. There, the web address where the photo is hosted will appear, starting with “http” and ending with “jpg”.

Highlight and copy the web address (starting with http and ending with jpg) of the photo and now go to the PW forum where you want to post/embed the photo; select full-screen window and click on the 4th icon (at top of screen) from the left… it will have a few drop-down menu options, one of which says “enter a non-floating image”; click on that one. Next, a text box will appear... paste the http web address of the photo in the text box (remove the http:// that is already there and post the entire photo address). Click “OK”. The photo will not show up in the thread/post window unless you click “preview post”; of course, if you did it right, the photo will show up when you submit the post.

So, there are a few steps involved, and it took me while to figure it out… but you just have to play around with the icons at the top of the post window to figure it out.

I hope this helps…

Rick

Hi Rick,

I've learned how to do it, also, and I was only suggesting that the process might be made more clear and accessible.

The problem, as I see it, is there is no visible, easy to find, link to the photo uploader. That's why I suggested a labeled link at the top of the forum page.

We have all seen threads where a member tries to "attach" a photo and that method doesn't work. Finally the question is asked "how do I post/embed a photo?" Then the process is explained over and over again in thread after thread.

Remember the running thread about the delivery of the new Steingraeber and the OP asking how to add pictures? I'm just trying to find a way to make the process easier for all members in all forums.

Frank, Help Us !!!! PLEASE !!!

Cheers,

Marty in Minnesota

Rick,

Could you put a sticky message at the top of this area with the URL and instructions?

Rick,

Once you receive the email with the address, there is no need to "open" the photo to copy the address. You can simply copy the address as it appears in the email.

Rick, thanks for providing some help on this one.

Marty, I'll provide instructions and a link soon.

In the meantime, you can always use the Photo Gallery uploader to upload as many as you want, and use the links it creates (where you get a small, medium, and large copy).

Sorry, BDB, only Frank or the global mods, (Ken and Greg/BBPlayer) can do the sticky messages.

And, Marty, good suggestion... seems like you know more about posting photos than I do. smile

There are also other ways to embed/copy/paste a digital picture in the forum thread windows, but I don't know how to do it. I'm not as computer savvy (or piano savvy smile )as I'd like to be.

Maybe Frank, Ken or Greg will see this thread and make it a Sticky thread.

P.S. Thanks Frank! Looks like you posted about the same time I did!

Rick

How is Rick not a global mod? The man has paid his dues for several years, no? Shown his fealty to the mores and standards, has he not? Go on, give him his step up. While you're at it, raise his pay from none to none and a half.
