Palmpirate, that's a lovely story, and how wonderful they felt called to sing with you. What a community contribution you made. And your final piece must have been a breath of fresh air. Brought tears to my eyes. Thanks fo posting the story.

Music is such a great way to heal yourself and others. I'm so glad you stepped outside of yourself to offer this for the family, and none of it was you "showing off". Just doing what music is meant to do.

Please sign me up! This will be good motivation for me, as well as my new piano being delivered tomorrow. For today, I'll have to practice on my old upright.

Palpirate - your description of playing the lullaby and sharing the comfort of music was very moving. I am sure it is something that will stay in the memories of all who participated as a moment of peace in a difficult time.

@Palmpirate
that was simply lovely and like Cathy it made my eyes well up in tears. A fitting tribute to the long life and memory of your loved one. I'm sure she heard it played and sung by those who loved her. {{{hug}}}

I missed a couple of days last week. I was getting over a cold and also returning to work after the holiday break. Adjusting to the new schedule plus still tired from illness .... not a good combination. I'm happy to say that I'm now back into my 30 minutes daily routine.

Daily practice is working wonders for me. I've tried many times before to return to the piano, but always got discouraged. My attempts at playing would sound so awful, especially since I could remember being somewhat proficient years ago.

But now I've gotten past the first "awkward" period, where I'm not struggling so much, and although I haven't even gotten anything hands-together yet, I'm feeling good about my progress because there IS progress.

Thanks, Palmpirate for writing and sharing that. Isn't it interesting how writing to crystalize a moment like that is transformative for both writer and reader? There's been research done on how writing about about tough experience can decrease overall stress indicators for many months after. It seems that some sort of inner healing is fostered by the focus of writing.

And on a much more mundane note, I'd like to try MOYD again this year... in spite of never having succeeded with it in the past. Nonetheless I've learned a lot via my attempts, so let's try again.

My official theme for this year is succeeding in ventures where, in the past, I've tended to stumble. Or as my inner Buddhist frames it: a year of releasing my old fixed notions of self.

Please step aside. You're standing in your own way.

I'd like to participate if I could. I promise I've practiced every day since my piano arrived Jan. 7th of this year.

While I have been doing this for months now, is not bad at all to have one more motivating factor out there! I can tell you it has been doing wonders for my playing technique. My goal for this year has been at least 1hr per day trying to go for more but at the very list, I sit and play every day no matter what. So far so good! smile

I'm home from New York and back to my lovely piano. Feels like a different world there from my mountains and wide open spaces.

Tangleweeds : "writing about about tough experience can decrease overall stress indicators for many months"
Thank you Tangleweeds, my other self has always been a writer but I’ve re-discovered my piano of late, and when I felt I couldn’t play it did help to write.

Ragdoll : "that was simply lovely and like Cathy it made my eyes well up in tears."
Thank you for your sharing Ragdoll. I found it was a real help to me to write and didn’t think it would be so moving for others, especially ‘strangers’. but then those with an artistic streak do the to ‘tune-in’ to emotions more than most might.

Jotur -:" how wonderful they felt called to sing with you"
I hadn’t thought of that, I was too focussed on playing and you are quite right, it was really very touching that they all came in from the other room to sing nursery rhymes at that time.

anrpiano : "By all means play! Music gives sound to the unutterable groanings of the human soul. You are there to do just that.
They cancel….. but not concerts for a reason." -

I had not thought of myself as having such a role to play, just went with the flow, and somehow it did bring release for everyone. For me it was all so unexpected and really quite affirming even though I scarcely would call myself much of a piano player.
Music really does have more to say to us than we know, and I suppose WE all know that. In our small ways we try to bring that to the world each time we try and play something, however simple or amateur. That’s what we celebrate amongst each other here in PW!

I’m travelling back to Canada now and looking forward to getting a practise schedule going again with every intention of getting a 2014 flag to add to my signature!

Traveling Feb 1, 2, and 3............

No piano nearby.

Nice day to travel though, will get a perfect January.

I have to say, merely signing up for this with complete strangers has gotten me to play 2 days in January when I may have just watched football or been lazy.

Thank you, internet smile

Kupe

Welcome to the forum, kupe and PianoBoenna! Sometimes having that little added "shame" of admitting you didn't get ot the piano is all you need to overcome a bit of inertia - I know it's helped me too so far!
