How do you work on pieces that have tempo change with a metronome?

Is there such a metronome software that does this? Basically you would have to program it e.g. 10 measures at 100bpm than a ritardando to 80 through 2 measures, then back to tempo etc.

I may be able take on this as a hobby project and try to make a free app. for Android but do you think people even need or would use such a metronome?

That'd be useful indeed! I always lose myself when there are ritardando's. But please make it for iOS too wink

Sorry sinophilia, but I do not own the equipment needed for ios development (Mac + idevice). Do not worry though as I will probably fail doing it for Android too anyway laugh

I think that it is better to practice the individual bars with a metronome and then add the two together. As validation you can perhaps check the fast and slow parts with a metronome but it seems a bit like overkill.

While I can see why this might be seen as a good idea, I think you might not grasp the idea of the metronome. It's not to fix some sort of performance level speed, it's to make sure that what we are playing has rhythmic integrity and certainty. Changes of tempo are great to practice but they can only be done once you have the underlying rhythm correct. Therefore it's best to just use the metronome for specific practice and keep the tempo steady. If the piece really has such a major tempo change (or, of course, time signature change) you will want to break that practice into sections.
