The entire piano was restored with new strings, hammers, leather etc. hammers are covered with deer leather, which is what was used on the vertical and square models when new

It sounds fantastic, and it is played very well in my humble opinion as well.

It sounds fantastic, and it is played very well in my humble opinion as well. Wouldn't hurt for them to tune it a bit better before posting it on youtube though! I agree that it's a charming sound. It reminds me of the 1880's Broadwood I learned to play piano on.

To me, the characteristic sound of the Playel is a clear, smooth tone when the note is initially played;
as the note is sustained, the tone modifies, and has more color, less of a pure sine wave.
Also, the notes died away more quickly, they didn't sustain as long as on modern pianos.

Do you know if this instrument has a true una corda for the soft pedal? Yes, this piano has two strings per note and pushing down the left pedal makes it play only one string. Sorry about the tuning, the piano had brand-new strings and they were still stretching.

The key to get a good sound with these old pianos, apart from totally restoring the action, is to know just how much tension to apply to the outer leather, which is very soft.
Most restorers overdo it and you get a pingy, dry and brittle sound which really has nothing to do with the music IMO.
