Forgot to ask this - the seat I got when I bought my unique 4-pedal upright has a round seat that adjusts up/dwn by turning, and has 4 legs with metal ends, claws clasp a clear round ball that's flat on the bottom to rest level on floor. is it particularly unusual? I've never seen another. thanks for any info.

Sounds more like a piano STOOL than a bench. I have one. Is it like mine? Penny\'s S&C with stool

If so, it's an antique and does have some value (maybe more than the piano sorry to say!). I paid $130 for mine. As you can see, it's not a bad match for my tiger oak veneer.

I had a stool just like it. They are pretty common in this neck of the woods.

I was told that you can sometimes find them deep in the woods in Maine. Seems the hunters set them out there so they could sit and spin in any direction to hit their target!

My piano stool, BTW, was fully restored. It received a new sound board, hammers, pinblock, shanks, strings and a new finish! Well, it was made sturdy again and given a new finish, anyway.

Back in the late 1970's, the (only) piano salesman in my small home town died. His widow had a large sale and moved out of their large old Victorian house. One of the things that she was selling was a piano stool exactly like yours, Penny. My grandmother (Erma) really, really wanted it, but the widow didn't care for her, and wouldn't sell it to her, at any price. However, the widow really liked my father, so I was OK in her eyes. The widow was willing to sell the stool to me, nice young man that I was (for all of $18). Later in the day, the widow remarked to my grandmother, "Well Erma, I sure hope you like your new piano stool."

Grandma's now downsizing & moving into a senior apartment community, and just yesterday I brought that stool home after a weekend visit to Pennsylvania. I'll remember her, the nutty widow, and that story every time I see it.

Good price, Dwain! I checked with eBay this morning, and there's a stool like mine, but a total wreck, going for $18. Other similar stools (in good condition) are going anyway from $70 to $150. What's the deal with the glass balls and claw feet? There's got to be a story there.

We bought ours off eBay, but it was local, so we just picked it up and didn't pay for shipping. Plus, it's a great match! There were some cool Victorian piano stools listed today as well.

This may be off the mark. In 18th century furniture, the claw and ball foot is derivative from Chinese mythology. The claw is a dragon's. The pearl is the pearl of happiness. The dragon is shown in things Chinese as pursuing the pearl. In Western art he has it. Its as good an answer as many you may hear. By the way dragons are pretty special to the Chinese.
