I am considering buying a Baldwin spinet approx. 1973 (serial 1006556). To my amateur eye and ear, it sounds pretty good and there were no glaring concerns when I looked at the innards. I think it's a real bargain at $200. But both legs are a bit loose -- one was obviously re-glued by someone who was not a professional. The legs themselves seem sound - the problem is at the point where they connect to the underside of the keyboard. Since we have young kids (that's the whole reason for the entry-level piano), I definitely would want to get the legs fixed. Any idea how much this kind of work would cost?

Welcome to Piano World!

The legs usually screw on to the bottom of the key-bed frame. Have you tried turning the legs clock-wise to see what happens?

I'd definitely get the legs stable with the little ones playing around it. Remember... safety first! smile

If they don't tighten up easily you might want to pass on this piano. I wouldn't suggest spending too much energy on the problem. Depending on where you live, there are likely plenty of pianos without the legs falling off.

The reasons these legs get loose or damaged in the first place are that people shove them around on carpet or whatever without tipping the piano off the legs, the other issue is people will unscrew the legs for various reasons and the nuts that are located under the cheek blocks move or fall out.

If this piano's legs have the machine threaded studs protruding from the top and are falling out then the nuts have been lost or are still rattling around in the piano. You have to take the piano apart to figure it out, about 6 screws on an acrosonic and whalla. Glue , "L" brackets and the myriad of other cheap fixes are no match for the 400 pounds of weight those joints have to deal with.

It is a pretty simple fix if it is the type where the legs just screw off.
