It's my pleasure to manage the MOYD thread - it keeps me focused too smile

Welcome to the latest batch - we've got several newcomers this year! It is great to see people coming back too!

I think it is pretty impressive to see how many folks make it through year after year!

OK, sign me up! I did this once before and loved it. Having that little added pressure will force me to stay true to myself when I am weak and want to give myself excuses. smile

They've all been deleted from the internet. They don't exist anymore. Beware the wrath of MOYD. smile

Seriously....Cas.... I'm wondering if there is truly something that displaying that badge does? For others? Besides that, don't really have a need to display achievement badges myself. I just want to support the idea of practicing everyday.

To Palmpirate's quetion about what happens for the other categories... everyone gets a badge. It is spelled out on the first page - if you report that you missed a day and get back on the wagon - you get the badge, if you are sick and report in, you get the badge, if you are away from home and report in you get the badge, if you start late (before 30 Sept) and play til the end of the year you get the badge.

I've removed the words "category" - MOYD is MOYD. I just followed the groupings I inherited. Frankly I'd have made the cut off date much earlier smile

Ron - as to your question "is truly something that displaying that badge does? For others? "...Well, I think it creates an awareness and perhaps makes folks curious as to what MOYD is about and may prompt them to try it.

Lots of participants don't put the badge in their signature. It's a personal choice. Others like the siggy bling smile

So if I understand correctly: If I'm in, I must report each day I "don't play/practice"?

What about scheduled holidays with no access to a piano?

That's right wimpiano, scheduled vacations are "excused" time.

Everyone...kindly take a moment and have a look at the FIRST PAGE of the thread. Everything is spelled out as clearly as possible.

For everyone's convenience I am reposting here:

MOYD RULES

1. Participating in MOYD requires you to sit on the piano bench and play something at least once daily. That's it. There is no minimum amount of time required. Five minutes counts... but more is better. Simply get to the piano every day, let it become a habit, and see what good things happen to your piano skills.

2. If you are away from home (for business, or for personal reasons) , you don't have to practice/play. You go to the 'Excused list".

3. If you are sick, you don't have to practice/play. You go to the 'Excused list".

4. If you are at home, and you are not sick and you miss a day, you have to come here and tell us the sad story of what kept you from playing. Then you go to the "Back on the Wagon list".

5. You may start late - however no new participants are accepted after September 30th.

6. Everyone who has reported being away, being sick, falling off and getting back on the wagon, or who signs up late has the right to put the MOYD 2014 badge in their signatures on 31 December 2014.

I see it as bragging rights. It's a great accomplishment to do this and stick with it, so why not get the badge to show you did it? Also, I think it's great to raise awareness to would-be pianists or those new to piano the concept of daily practicing and what an impact that can have on your overall progress. When I saw those badges before I had always wondered what they were for...then I found out smile

Yes..bragging rights! smile I like that ... This will be my fifth year of MOYD. Hmmm that reminds me... my hubby told me that if I stayed with piano for 5 years he'd buy me a grand when he retired. I wonder if I should remind him of that smile ?

Talk about motivation eh?

I do no? I'll think about it. Only if it helps others.
I just read those rules. I didn't realize one could start playing everyday, late. Then sign up. I had been for the year. Just figured I'd support. That's all.

Morodiene.... Have you ever thought about selling cars? smile

Cas.... Time to take him on a tour of the Fazioli factory. Then, settle for one of those common everyday Steinways. smile

Hi Ron, yes there is late sign up -both for a late start and a "retro-active" start. We're pretty flexible. I even had one woman ask to sign up with her sister who played a different instrument one year as a MOYD team...why not? The point really is just to encourage everyone to stick to it.

Before I took over, many people made their own badges but then we (courtesy of MaryBee) offered a "set" badge for those who couldn't and folks seem to like it well enough. I don't see anyone creating their own, and it seems to have become a sort of "logo" for MOYD. Now we just change the colour (I'm Canadian, it gets a "u" smile ) every year.

As for the visit to Fazzoli....well, that could be fun, but the truth of the matter is that we'd be hard pressed to host a grand in our home any way.....but a girl can dream eh?

Well, my desires have nothing to do with who gets signed up you know smile -- I could sign everyone up if that were the case -but since you seem willing, you're on for the challenge.

As for not getting the Jabberwoky reference... I really wonder what percentage of folks under 30 are familiar with it? Not to mention that a high percentage of our membership is from non-Anglo cultures which may not be as familiar with Lewis Carroll. I think there could actually be quite a number of folks who might not get it. Nonetheless, I love it, and it seemed like a fun way to start the thread. Last year I did a quote from a Looney Tunes cartoon. No one commented on that.

Absolutely not! This works completely on the honour system and we just report when we DON'T play.

If you're sick, or away from home you're excused, if you simply don't manage to play you have to go "back on the wagon".

Please read the rules on the first page everyone!

Sorry, I can't sign up...

Unfortunately I can't have the compromise to play everyday... Not even the compromise to request an exclusion every time I do not play. My life is not as foreseeable as I would like...
My compromise is to play whenever I can.
