A week out from Australia's longest (240Km) footrace I responded to a plea from an ultrarunner who had two people pull out from his crew. It was a big decision knowing I could not play piano at all during the event, but having crew experience I could not sit by and do nothing.
So 4th - 7th Dec I was awol but back into my normal regime having lost nothing but gained a wonderful experience. Well, it was for a worthy cause.:)

Well, it's two weeks till the end of the year and I eagerly await my upgraded siggy with TWO years on it! Yay!
I have practiced every day except for the days when I was out of town on vacation. Most days I practice twice - a half hour in the morning before work then whatever I can manage in the evening.
Note that I said I practice, not that I PLAY.... Maybe that will happen in 2014.
Looking forward to signing up for next year's thread. This thread is an inspiration.

Way to go Oongawa! I'm finishing up my 4th year and though I've been away on vacation for various amounts of time I've only missed 2 days due to feeling sick. My hubby knows I'm really not well if I don't even play a few scales! Most days I practice, but some days I just play

Oh no! Does anybody have a remedy for splitting fingers? We've had a cold, dry winter here this year, & I've got a split finger on the outside tip of RH 4 - right where it hits the key. Yesterday I only managed to play through a couple of Christmas carols, & it was a real struggle. (typing's not easy, either) I don't know if I played long enough to count - don't think it was 10 minutes, so I guess I have to be excused for yesterday. As soon as I got up this morning, I tried working on the new piece my teacher assigned on Thursday - Mozart Menuetto 1 in C Major - & the finger's a little better this morning, I think because my hand hasn't been in water yet. Definitely played for more than 10 minutes this time. If I can keep my hand out of the dishpan today, maybe I can get it to heal. I'm also going to be away Dec 30-31 & Jan 1, so I'll need to be excused for those days, too.

Ouch - Carol!!! That must hurt like the Dickens!
Please note we don't set a time limit. Obviously the more the better, but if all you can squeeze in is a run through of scales or a section of a work in progress or a run through of an old familiar piece....well, that counts.
Try to keep your hand dry - and maybe some vitamin E or aloe vera cream might help with the healing - I think B12 can help with healing too.
I'll mark you away for Dec 30-31 and Jan 1...well, you'll just start MOYD 2014 on the 2nd!
I don't count "Late" starts til the end of Jan, beginning of Feb.
Take care!

Thanks Cheryl - so I can put a star on my calendar for yesterday? I've been putting vitamin E on my finger, & I found the rubber gloves I used when I had surgery on that hand a few years ago (why is it always my right hand??) They're some kind of industrial or surgical gloves that our pottery studio tech uses to mix glazes, not tight-fitting, but thin enough that I'm actually typing with the glove on right now & it cushions my "wound" a bit.

Yes, indeed - you can keep your star for yesterday my dear! I'm glad you've got the gloves handy to help you out while you're healing!!!

i will be gone form my piano 22nd Dec til Jan 3rd 2014. Holiday visits to Boulder CO with my two other sons. One has a piano so I will get some time on the keys there but hardly any 'practice'! It has been an incredible year but I have kept my vow to play every day that I can, and it has really been a wonderful thing for myself. When do we sign up again!

Nutrogena Hand cream, in the tube is tremendous for healing split fingers. Use it regularly to prevent splits too.

Dynamobt, thanks for the tip. This one's healing up fairly well, but this has become a recurring problem the last 3 or 4 winters, so I'll get some Nutrogena.

When I signed up for MOYD last January, I was not sure how I was going to practice/play each day (for a whole year!). I can not believe how easy this was to complete. My time at the keys is sacred to me - and I look forward to it each day. And without this thread, I am not sure I would have had that little extra push. So I want to thank you all for "being there" for me; and especially I want to thank casinitaly for organizing this terrific group. Happy New Year!

Scorpio - I agree with you - having this community to give us a little "push" to keep on track does help.
It's my pleasure to coordinate MOYD - It's a way to give back to PW - and it's fun too!

Hey Cheryl, do I get a 2013 badge? Looking at my calendar, I only missed 1 day in May, & that was for travelling. HAPPY NEW YEAR! Carol

Yes indeed you get a badge Carol ! If you are travelling, you are on the excused list, and those who are excused get a badge.
Actually the only way to NOT get a badge is to give up!
If you missed for being ill, or being away, you go on the excused list. If you missed and re-start you get back on the wagon --- the only way to forfeit the badge is to not get back on the wagon!
Go get that badge!
