A Fazioli dealer posted this video of a client who upgraded their Steinway "D" to a Fazioli F308 (a good idea!)...and got a custom case and custom furniture to match the custom case!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQegP7jj57A

It looks beautiful.

Absolutely Stunning!

Notice - No lyre-tipping and the side logo is perfectly placed.

(I'd be happy to accept the leftover D.)

I liked the piano but not as much as some of the other art cases by Fazioli or Boesendorfer.

I don't like the idea of building some other furniture in the room to match the piano.

No question it's a beauty! No one played it. I sure hope someone plays the thing.

What a beautiful piano and room! I agree with you though. Someone BETTER play that thing, or I'm gonna go in there and take it laugh

One thing I enjoyed - in addition to the Fazioli, of course - was the excellent technical quality of this video. Not only nice to look at, but the sound was quite good. Voice mic-ing is natural and clear, with some room sound. So many videos are a chore to watch and listen to. Well done!

PS: Ah, well now I see the credits and it's obviously a seriously pro video production - still enjoyed it tho!

That is what I'm wondering....who plays it? PLEASE tell me that they didn't build this just to be a piece of furniture!! Or that it would be played only once in a rare while. (OK, I get that it also is not a practice piano.) I've seen too many similar pianos being used as examples of wealth, and not as artistry, and just keep shaking my head when I hear about them.

I also wondered what the primary purpose of the piano is.

I have to tip my hat to Manuel. His piano store Showcase Pianos is fantastic.
He has done an amazing job of promoting Fazioli in Vancouver and beyond.
He supports the artists as well as the consumers and has the respect of those that service pianos.
Great job thumb thumb thumb

Who cares. You know many Ferraris and Porsches are not driven to more that 10% of their potential?

Whoever bought it, good for them. Whatever their prerogative.

If I has to guess, they don't play it. Good smile less wear and tear! 10 feet is not ideal for good sound. 9 feet is. They try 5,6,7,8,9,10,12, and 9 feet is always the sweet spot.

Also, if the owner plays, he would commission a painting with himself playing the piano. I would at least, not Ron Losby playing my piano hahaha

I'm not judging. Good for that guy! I bet he works really hard. And smart.

I would say it's primary purpose is to be a piece of musical art that fits in with the house better than that atrocious Steinway D that was there before. Oh, I hope it was a Hamburg at least.

I really wanted to hear the piano? I expected the background piano music to finish by showing it being played on the piano.

Marty,
I think the purpose of a piano is for people to use their fingers on those black and white things at the wide end of the piano and to use their feet on those pedals down below. I even think you are better off sitting in front of the wide end.
WELCOME to PianoWorld!

On a more serious note; I did see a folded pad under the lyre when the were moving the Steinway out. That looks suspiciously like a lyre tipping move. Oh heaven forbid it!

Here in London the F278 is very much the standard recital piano one finds (not the F308). When Trinity selected a Fazioli at Greenwich it was the F278, for musical reasons of course. Things might have been different if the auditorium was the 5000+ seat Albert Hall. I wonder how many choose the larger F308 and what the advantages are musically.

Wonderful craftsmanship, and the video is superb in every way. I'm so glad this was posted.

That said (and I'm sure it's a character flaw), I've never really gotten the art-case piano phenomenon.

If it were me, I like to imagine I'd pay what it took to acquire the "basic" big Fazioli (which is gorgeous), then spend the overage on a lot of lessons from a great teacher, with anything remaining going for beer and skittles.

On the other hand, I don't expect ever to have the problem of figuring out how to spend that kind of money. smile

I think people have the right to buy a piano for whatever reason they want without being criticized. For some, including me, the furniture aspect of a piano is important(although I chose an ebony non art case piano because I had already quadrupled my budget)and highly appealing.

If one can afford a spectacular piano one should not be criticized for purchasing it even if it will be used 100% for decorative purposes. Although pianos are mostly bought for music making, they are also beautiful pieces of furniture and this is also valid a reason to buy one. I think it's very arrogant to judge another person's reason for buying something.

Exquisite piano crafting and the addition of the painting is a clever concept. At least the owners have both money and good taste. Having one without the other does not work in such projects.

Kind regards,

Robert.

All due respect, this is not a good attitude to have.

First of all, you're just assuming that the customers and this dealer, who went to the trouble to make this presentation don't play the piano. I see no reason to disrespect them, or any basis for this assumption.

But that's besides the point. People who like pianos (i.e., us here) should appreciate anyone who supports piano manufacturers and related businesses. Wealthy people spending money on pianos can't possibly be a bad thing for the piano industry!

Fully agree. It's also a distinct possibility that even if nobody in the house plays they hold recitals, have parties where they hire a pianist/trio/quartet/etc to entertain their guests. More opportunities for artists struggling to make a living.

It seems unlikely to me that someone who embarked in such a project wouldn't have some idea of how they wanted to use the end result beyond mere decoration.

Thank you Robert for posting, I appreciate everyone's kind comments, especially Rod who is so well respected in our community!

Naturally, I agree with Robert's viewpoint, and to answer the concerns of some - yes - the piano will be used! The owner's two middle children are learning piano on the F308, and he also purchased a C.Bechstein Concert 8 upright in Vavona for them to use as their practice piano. He also has an older child already married that has an F212.

We have made quite a few videos and have posted them on our website, almost all are somehow related to Fazioli. Take a look here: http://www.showcasepianos.com

Thank you again, and if anyone is in the area please feel free to visit one of our stores! (We have espresso machines!!)

Best Regards,

We've been frozen in for a couple of days, and now snowed in to boot, so I'm wasting a larger amount of time than normal surfing the net. Another post led me to this one. Whew...

Beautiful piano, no doubt about that. I'm in agreement with those above who think the matching furniture is a little over the top, but it's a free market, right? People can do what they like with their money. And if they support the piano industry, and hire starving artists from time to time, that's great.

I suppose I'm traditional when it comes to works of "art" though, and I'm referring to the grotesquely large paint-by-numbers piece hung over the custom cabinet. I think a painting ought to stand on its own, and be worthy of framing and display (otherwise, it shouldn't be). I find paintings selected--or commissioned--to match decor to be in poor taste.

Hey, Manuel. Thanks for the wonderful videos!
I live in Brazil, but have been to UBC many years ago, as a medical postgradutate.
Now I go to Vancouver to snowboard at Whistler once in a while, and next time be sure I'll stop by for a coffee.
I have 2 grands downhere: a Mason BB (recently acquired), and an Euterpe Eu160, sold by C.Bechstein. This one I bought from a brazilian diplomat that used to live in Belgium, and as far as I'm concerned, is the same piano now produced in Czech Republic under Bechstein supervision, in Bohemia factory, now named W.Hoffmann - am I correct? It's a very good instrument, which I use for practising. Not as great as M&H BB, though, that is my favorite.
