Hi fellow jazz phreeks, I'm planning a master class on the Herbmeister in January, can anybody give me some ideas of what to analyze from Herbie's playing? Is there anything you want to learn about? Thanks for your time)

Tough question.
His 60s stuff was great. The quintet w Miles , the solo albums, classic compositions.
His 70s stuff was hit or miss. For every Head Hunters there was a sunlight or Mr Hands. But there was also the duo piano album w Chick...
The 80s: rocket, Vsop w wynton, tony and Ron carter, then I lost track of him. I got a New Standard and Gershwins world. I didn't get the Joni cover record he did, even though it won a surprise Grammy. But none of it thrilled me like Taking Off or Speak Like A child.
I guess I am the only one who finds Butterfly and Chamelion boring...cool ep solos but don't like the tunes.

What kind of time modulation Herbie does from the 10th to the 11th bar in "The Eye Of The Hurricane"? Some people notate the 11th bar as a 6/4 and the melody runs in eight-notes. But the quarter note of the 4/4 actually is not the same lenght as the quater note of the 6/4. Could it be better written down in quarter note triplets in one 6/4 bars? "The Eye Of The Hurricane"

I’m thinking back nearly 50 years when I was a doting Oscar Peterson fanatic. He could do no wrong and, for me, was the pinnacle of keyboard jazzdom (I was young-ish and naïve!). One evening, it was either in 66 or 67, I was meandering the AM radio band searching for some jazz to listen to and chanced upon the VOA jazz hour. They were playing the Miles Davis In Concert album. It was a revelation. By the end of the transmission it had completely cured me of O.P. who I now still consider to have been a technical wizard but a creative hack. I followed Herbie through the earlier years - less so after his funk phase though Head Hunters knocked me out at the time.
His preamble on that early version of Funny Valentine sounds as fresh and innovative to my ears now as it did then. I wish I could think of an insightful question but nothing springs to mind at the moment. You know that slide up to the octave tremolo thing he does such a lot. It’s so simple and effective. Why didn’t someone else think of it before (or did they?). I’ll definitely be looking in on this.

can you give me a link to this recording? Thanks for your time. Everybody points to HH's voicings, I don't know enough about his discography to pinpoint specific tunes/albums to focus on..

Agree 100% dire tonic. Has to be one of the nicest ballad intros. Magical solo too which starts here http://youtu.be/psR4eBZ-IgA?t=10m

Does anyone have other YouTube suggestions? I loved the chick clip I had not seen that and it was a great improv. Is there anything like that for herbie?
Hate to ask but is the consensus that there isn'tt anything current to analyze?
