We will be moving in the Spring and I have a 6' 6" Feurich which sits on carpet. in the new house I must buy a rug to go under it...but a few friends have said try it on the bare floor first. I like a really mellow sound. Any opinions?? I suppose it is just up to me. Every piano I have ever had has been on carpeting.

Carpet definitely can help.

In addition, expert voicing may also be required.

At the very least, always have a mat of some sort or a scrap of carpet under the pedal area to protect the floor from your heel. It's surprising how quickly you can make a permanent scuff mark.

A lot depends on the size of the room, its other furnishings, your own taste, and your sensitivity to sounds. In a big room with high ceilings, wood alone might give you a good sound. One of our members has her piano on a tile floor. In a smaller room, or a room with very reflective walls, flooring, windows, framed art, etc., a carpet (and maybe other furnishings) might be needed to tone it down. You will have to experiment. There's no rule, but if you need carpeting it should at least cover the floor under the whole soundboard. Where the piano is placed within the room can make a great difference, too, in the way the sound comes back to the player.

Some of us have ears which are especially--- even painfully--- sensitive to loud sounds. That big piano sound is so wonderful, but if it makes you go deaf, taming the amount of sound volume might be preferable. A piano can irritate the ears (if it's too loud for you) to the point that you could lose some hearing. If your ears ring or buzz after you play, better get that carpet; tinnitus is an early warning sign of approaching hearing loss. Our hearing can be protected, but never brought back once it is gone. (I have foam dog beds under my piano--- it's their favorite hangout.)

Having a nice piano, I'm sure you'll want to keep it tuned and regulated, and skillfully voiced to the room. All the acoustic treatments to the room go along with this, and serve the same purpose.

I hope this is not more than you asked for. In the end, what you said is exactly right--- it's up to you.

Thanks for the input...I will most likely get an area rug w/pad that the Piano can sit on. Cannot put carpeting in that area. The Piano IS kept up well, someone comes a great distance to service it. I am picky!

I have a related question that I don't think deserves a new thread. I want to put a rug under my piano as well, but how? Is this something you can do yourself, or do I need to call in professionals to scoot it around?

I have been wanting to put one under my own grand for a while. I find the echo of the room to be a bit too much and takes away the closeness and the warmth. The wife is not too enthusiastic about having one there and I have never gotten around to it, but I will try it someday. An oval rug should be good for that.

What do snowflakes and Chickerings have in common? There are no two exactly alike!

You can do it with two people, one of whom is strong enough to lift one leg of the piano at a time while the other positions the rug and caster cup.

Cut a 2X4 to a length equal to the floor to bottom of the piano. Use a second 2X4 as the lever with the first as a fulcrum. It is then very easy to lift one leg a couple inches off the floor and hold it steady while the second person positions the rug. It will save your back.
