Hello all,

I am having a real problem with the sustain pedal on my Petrof 52". Every time I release the pedal it makes a weird "squeak/clunk" sort of noise. Needless to say it's very distracting.

I opened up the bottom and tried tightening the washer, thinking that it must be loose...and it did indeed get rid of the noise but it also made the dampers not work! (Don't worry, I loosened it immediately and they work fine now) There doesn't seem to be a "happy medium" that I can tighten the washer to either...it either squeaks, or doesn't work at all.

I'm very hesitant to spray WD40 or a similar substance on the joint...I don't want to damage any parts. Any better solutions?

Thanks and best wishes,
Sam

Don't put WD-40 on any cloth, leather, wood or strings. Try to isolate the offending component by operating the system from each part. Any loose brackets that can be tightened where they attach-do so. Sometimes the bottom board of the piano is loose. You have to tilt the piano onto it's back to reach the screws. Don't try tilting the piano onto it's back without professional guidance and being strong enough to lift 350 or so pounds. Without knowing the proper technique the piano can slip out of your hands and crash onto the floor.

If the first three sentences don't get you a solution and the fourth one is the most likely-hire a technician with an upright tilter to make a house call.

I would not advise anyone to tilt a piano on its back without a piano tilter. Tilting it on its side is safer without a lot of equipment, but you still have to have the correct equipment and know what you are doing.

True. Unless you are a world class deadlifter, don't turn the piano over on your own

I think this sort of post is penned in hopes that there is some easy DIY sort of fix. That seldom happens and pedal squeaks are almost never simple to fix. In fact, if you want to watch a piano tech break out in a cold sweat, mention that you have a pedal squeaking.

You'll need to get a tech who can fix stuff. 10% of a tech's reputation is tied to how well he can tune, and the remaining 90% reflects how well he can fix what's broke.
