THE humble piano keyboard is the top-selling toy this Christmas, as classics make a comeback.

That is good news, not only for the industry but for the kids of all ages.
What kills me is the current glut of these "Guitar Hero" games. I can see the fun, but really, for the price, you can get your kid an inexpensive guitar and an instructional DVD to start playing for real.

I totally agree! We just had our family Christmas gathering and the "Guitar Hero" was the star of the gathering. One of our nephews got it for Christmas and brought it over for everyone to play. Pretty fun, but after I heard what the parents paid I had the same thought. You could have bought the real thing, and had something that would have developed a talent that could have actually been used later on.

The big star of the show in our house this year war the Wii. I have to say I am not much of a video game person, but my boys are. I do like the fact it makes you get off the couch in order to play it. That tennis game is pretty addictive. I wished their was a way to intergrate a piano with that Wii game. Now that would be cool!

Terry: The Wii is addictive. Just be careful. After I got mine (cough, I mean my kids') I developed a wicked case of "Wii elbow". No joke.

I agree completely with you, Stanza and Terry.
A guy I know recently purchased the 'Guitar Hero' game and spends his time practising away on it.

I don't understand it. Why not buy a real guitar, they are much more fun!

I work for the company who makes Guitar Hero, so I'm biased, but I a really enjoy the game, it's addictive (and so is the Wii!) The game itself laugh about that phenomenon, when you play on expert mode you'll sometimes read "At some point, maybe you should consider playing a real guitar" when loading.

The game do help with rythm and motivated quite a few people toward the real instrument, I don't see it as a competitor to real instrument but rather as an entry point.

I wonder what statistics you have that support that it motivates people toward the real instrument? 'T would be interesting. Can you share Miss T?

No statistics sorry, this is only a personal feeling. Just a bunch of friends learning guitar lately, kind of a trend. I work on kids title so I'm not tied to the game directly. I was a huge fan of the game before Activision bought the license.

One thing that can be easily verified is that people who already play an instrument are better at this game (at least at first). A good sense of rythm and a well trained pinky help a lot. This, again, is my own observation. I'm pretty sure most people on this forum will be able to get past the medium mode while many people get stuck on easy.
