I am looking for a good piano in the $8-10 K range. There is a lightly used Baldwin Model L, 2000 here in my town that is asking $16K,but I think that is a bit high. Is this a good price? Also, the only piano store in town sells exclusively Perzina grands. Does anyone have opinions on new Perzinas?

Baldwins are excellent. very solid pianos. perhaps you could make a reasonable offer.

The Baldwin model L is a very fine instrument in general. A less than ten year old model in good condition in the LA area would sell for between $18-$19k. New ones list over $40k.

Perzinas are in the top ranks of the pianos comming from China. IMO they would be several notches below the Baldwin. A new 6'1" can probably be bought for less than your Baldwin. I would take the Baldwin in a heartbeat if the age and condition checks out.

I'm in the midst of having a Baldwin restored. I like Baldwin's a lot and played several in my search. $16K for a 2000 Baldwin L strikes me as a very reasonable price. Of course, "reasonable" to you also means that you have that much to spend.

If you do, and if the Baldwin checks out with an independent tech, I can't imagine you'd be disappointed. I'm with Marty: if I'd seen that one I probably would have bought it

...IF it checks out with an INDEPENDENT tech. Don't skip that step on a $16K used grand.

Try this: play a simple hymn-like piece (gentle chords) with a melody on top or better yet in the middle of the chords. Bring out the melody. Try it on a Baldwin, Steinway, or other softer-hammer instrument. Now try on a <insert-some-brand-where-I-won't-start-a-flame-war>

If the results of this test mean something to you, you'll love the Baldwin.

PianoWorld skillfully removed the end of the sentence "Now try on a _____ " in order to prevent a flame war. Cool. :-)

I finally went and played the Baldwin. It is beautiful, with a really nice sound and feel. After speaking with the owner, who bought it new in 2004, I looked underneath and found the serial number. Turns out it was manufactured in 1997, but didn't sell for quite a few years. I appreciate all of the input. After playing both, I am now set on getting either the Baldwin or going out of town to find another used piano, i.e. Yamaha, Kawai etc. I have played a few Kawais and so far the Baldwin has impressed me the most. Thanks again for all the input!

I bought a 1995 Baldwin L a year ago. Like the one you're looking at, it sat for a few years before being sold the first time. It's been a great piano, and I've never had a moment of buyer's remorse. A good tech can bring out the full potential. Larry
