ZOOM N2H RECORDER: A GOOD METRONOME? A GOOD RECORDER? #2175336

The Zoom N2h pocket recorder has a built-in metronome. Does anyone have any experience with the N2h metronome feature? Volume control (is it loud enough), frequency settings, tone generator, ease of use, etc.? If the metronome feature is good quality then I don't need to buy a (separate) metronome.

Also, does anyone have any experience with the recording quality of this pocket recorder irrespective of the metronome? Say to record your piano playing. Online reviews indicate it's quite good as a recorder but I have no first-hand experience. And it's a bit pricey.

Any comments on these two questions will be appreciated.

I trust this query is in the correct slot on PW.

I think you mean the H2n.

I don't know what you mean by metronome, though. Do you mean does it function as a regular standalone metronome? If that's your question, no, I don't think it does. I have never tried to use it as such but the one time I inadvertently toggled "metronome" on, it simply gave me a beat before recording and then stopped once recording started.

If there's some other setting I'm missing, please tell me because my metronome broke.

I think you are right about the H2N not having a metronome. It does some metronome stuff but it must be used after the fact as an overdubbing thing. It can't be used as a stand alone metronome to check your timing, a fact I discovered after buying the thing. The literature on this product is totally false and misleading regarding the metronome. I called the Zoom tech and he verified this mislabeling. See why I don't what a Chinese acoustic grand.

Anyway I do like the recording functions.

I own the H4n, and the metronome thing is the same. It's not intended as a stand-alone metronome, but as an over-dubbing device. You may be able to get around this with having a very long track recording of nothing, but hardly worth it. Just get a metronome or use an online or phone app.

Dear DanS: Sorry my writing style irritates you. A hold-over from teaching online classes where CAPs was the only way to get students' attention. Since I'm not dealing with students here and so as to unruffle your feathers I will use lower-case intro titles in all future correspondence.

How about as a recorder? I am looking to get something for my studio and liked the smallness and portability of this one. Is the quality good? Good enough for recording samples for auditions for jobs and such?
