Before I go out to the shed and get to work I am just after confirmation that it is okay to clean up my key pins with steel wool.

I have wool size '0000'

Just a tad nervous about scratching the little suckers.

Negative, for me, cleaned with mineral oil (spirit) then polished if possible with polishing paste for nickeled metals, well dried with a dry cloth.
cork grease was often used as a lube on front pins.

Nothing is good as well, as is Mc Lube 44 (spray) coating of very slippery Teflon. (to be done far from pinblock)

Talcum or stearate are OK but hygroscopic (good for leather bushing however).

Some use Teflon fluid (CLP) in the bushing cloth, may be OK, I just dont know.

If they are rusty, replace 'em.

If the pins are brass, the steel wool will leave micro abrasions that will quickly finish off your key bushings. If they are plated, you can wool them, but you will need to finish with the #0000 and then polish with jeweler's rouge or a fine polishing compound.

These are 'non-durable' parts, and when they re damaged, replacing them is the professional way to go.

Brass pins find today on Yamaha seem to be coated with a protective transparent film.
That could be machining marks, but as it does not go when the pin is polished I believe it is something else

No way to know what it is, may be something obtained with a chemical and electrical process.

I do not like steel wool generally speaking. I find polishing better done with the back side of linen abrasive cloth.

Replacing pins make a real enhancement in touch.(assuming good quality pins are used, that may not be as easy as it seem)
