You're playing your holiday tunes for friends and family, so let's hear what you are playing for them.

This is not a recital, but rather just a place to casually post up what you are playing for others this holiday season.

Duplicate tunes are perfectly fine. Encouraged even to hear various versions of the same piece so please post up your holiday performances for others to enjoy.

I am taken by surprise by your challenge Mr SH. It could be the hot weather we have down under at the moment but I don't normally get into the festive spirit until the 21st December. Might just have to join in

Problems with piano are 90% psychological, the other 10% is in your head.

Holiday tunes? Christmas songs, you mean? Nothing else?

Let's get the ball rolling! This is from last night. Live performance. We don't really get to play Christmas tunes often or get to practice so it's messy. Mic placement is near Piano speakers so it's a bit unbalanced.

Will record a solo piano tune today hopefully.

I will admit that I had no idea that this was a Christmas song until I looked into it. I've had a version of it on it on my Christmas playlist for years by this cat named Rick Modlin, and whenever it comes up I have to:

A) stop what I'm doing to listen to it, because it is just so good
B) remind myself to get it off of the playlist because it is not a Christmas song

Well, it turns out that it IS a famous and ancient Christmas song, and it has been covered by everyone from Linda Ronstadt to Sting.

Here is my contribution....

I love Christmas Time Is Here, it's just the right amount of mellow!

I am working on an "original" arrangement of the Carol of the Bells (in which the definition of original arrangement is I took two different versions, transposed one to be the right key, and then played mix and match with measures from each grin

Anyway, I'm hoping to get a recording of it, even if it's a not-so-great audio quality, because if I don't record it I won't remember how I played when the next Christmas comes around!

Christmas Song - Solo Piano

Just one take and improvised from a lead sheet...it's actually tougher to play these Christmas tunes because we don't get a chance to practice them much. Enjoy!

Beautiful performance Ken! And so well recorded. I can't seem to get a good recording from my piano. Maybe it's me. LOL. I certainly did not know this to be a Holiday tune, let alone a Christmas tune.

I LOVE it, jazzwee! What a great rendition of this! You are just smooth and right there with all the styling and "cool." And it's got such a nice movement to it - strolling along like Frank, or Bing, or somebody smile Such a laid-back "beat". You are great!

Thank you JW!

I love what you did with The Christmas Song. You made it sound so easy, but it had the tasty voicings, just the right amount of added intervals on the melody, and that Christmas ballad groove locked in. Awesome.

That was absolutely lovely, Jazzwee. So whimsical. I felt like I was sitting before a fireplace listening to you play. I was filled with nostalgia.

The other two jazz numbers by you and Ken were pretty, too.

This has always been a favorite of mine.

laugh I'm heading out in to the dark and cold in about 15 minutes for band practice. Brrr.

I'll have to think about holiday music. I'm playing the lunch hour at the Co Springs Senior Center on Monday the 23rd. I warned them I don't have Christmas music, but it'd be a shame to not do *something* I think. So we'll see -

Stay warm for you, too! I hear you guys got arctic air yesterday!

I'm just getting to listen to some of these recordings, and they're making me feel very festive!

Kenjazz, I also didn't realize that Lo How a Rose Eer Blooming was a Christmas song, I really enjoyed your playing of. And Jazzwee, great addition to your first upload!

Dannac, what arrangement is this? (get it, it's a pun, sorry, shot me now). Is that your own arrangement? It sounds lovely!

Now, I need to get practicing and see if I can push the tempo up a little bit, that always makes such a difference....

Looking forward to more listening soon!

Dannac, what a lovely piece! Love the intro and the transitions. Had such a new age feel to it but the main melody was played with a lot of heart and soul. Beautiful!

I may be submitting a piece here to this fine, annual thread founded and revived by Hunky, but in the meantime here's a wonderful video perfectly in tune with the theme of the thread guaranteed to set the proper mood and get everyone in the Christmas Spirit:

TrapperJohn: I enjoyed the video very much. Really puts you in the spirit of Christmas.

Peterws: I love the two pieces, especially ON CHRISTMAS DAY. I felt like I was up on the Scottish Highlands watching dancers pirouette and have a wonderful time. You have a delicate, beautiful touch.

This is partly just to participate.
Partly to work through the process of making a file on Garageband. Then getting it here.
Let me criticise, first. It (any vulgar expletive). smile
Am playing on a CDP-100. Don't have my M8000 working anymore. Sad...I really connected with that keyboard. Loved it. Now taking a step back and relearning. I'm just far enough along to really connect with the feeling in the keys.
Maybe Santa will bring me a VPC? smile
BTW: This is my first upload after EccoFatto.

Ron, you did a great job with that beautiful melody. I liked the emphasis on the second half start - such command and proclamation. Very well played.

I just uploaded to youtube this tutorial video of 'White Christmas'. It is a tutorial that might give intermediate piano students some ideas.

Hm. I haven't posted anything here, but I really thought this thread was for ABFers to post their own recordings of themselves playing holiday tunes.

I for sure didn't think it was about youtube tutorials and flogging your teaching.

Bah, humbug?

Yep, that certainly is my understanding (and why I'm trying to work up one of my holiday pieces so that it's worth recording!) So, let's hope this thread can continue in that vein.

This is actually my favorite Holiday Song. I'm not a huge fan of Christmas but I love this melody and play it every December until my wife is probably quite tired of it. I play it all different ways but this is typical.

Roger, that was great! Thanks for sharing it with us! Do you use a lead sheet (or fake sheet) with the melody and chords written in, or is it all just improvised?

There's something about O Holy Night that seems to lend itself to runs up the keyboard. A few years back I played a Christmas medley that had O Holy Night in it, with a few runs that I just loved. Maybe I should see if I can get that back into my fingers this year. (If I am, I'm gonna have to hurry though!)

jotur, ShiroKuro - Thanks a lot, I appreciate the comments.

I used a lead sheet, I do for most things except classics of course. I don't know how to start from scratch with no guide at all.

If I was just working from a lead sheet, I'd be lucky if I could get block chords on 1 and 3! smile

But your recording inspired me to find the medley I have with O Holy Night in it, and while looking around, I found a bunch of old Christmas scores that I haven't played for a few years, so that was fun. I'm going to try to get the medley playable because it has O Holy Night and also a few places where one song is in the right hand and another in the left hand, which I absolutely love. But gee this score is tough! I can't believe I played 6 years ago. laugh Actually, I think it took me several months to work up back then, and I never did get a few measures down, whereas now I think I can do the whole thing in a fews (knock on wood). I don't know about polishing it to recording-quality, but I'll try!

Wow, lots of incredible recordings already. Roger, that was ear-DE-lucsious. Incredibly rich and smooth and I can use some of that now because I've been having some serious recording issues lately due to the fact that my Zoom H2 partially died.

This recording is a bit different for a lot of reasons:

1.) I'm playing this slightly peeved because my Zoom H2 won't record on the built in digital recorder anymore. It crapped out. It will only record using the external speakers. That's still perfectly fine if you are playing on an acoustic piano but right now I am on the digital and the line input is reading ...Pooh!

2.) What you are hearing (I am semi-proud to say) is a first ever recorded performance via my headphones. That's right, I have the headphones clamped over the zoom recorders microphones just like a knit hat so the Zoom recorder is actually recording this acoustically via the speakers in my headphones. Haha, how cheap is that?? But like I said, recording from an acoustic will still work fine but in the meantime I'm just too cheap to buy a new unit.

3.) About half way through the overhead jets from Luke air force base start to kick in but it's not too bad so I left it.

So that's where I'm at right now and here's what I got.

Mr Super Hunky: Your WE THREE KINGS was totally celestial!! I've never heard a rendition like it. Love the rocky beat.

Ellsa: Your WALTZ OF THE FLOWERS was lovely and I could envision ballerinas flitting across the stage.

Now for my much humbler contributions:

I used to listen to this song growing up in Malaysia so it brings back lots of fond memories:

THE CHIPMUNK SONG

I recorded this piece two weeks ago:

Mr. SH - That was remarkable, I remember when you were early in your playing days in - what - 2005? Pretty impressive.

Your makeshift recording technique is surprising too. I don't know if I'd have thought of doing it that way. Pretty creative.

Just catching up with the tremendous postings now. Wow!

Ladypayne - I can sense you coming over to the dark side of jazz smile Your version of I'll be home for Christmas had that feel all the way.

Mr. Super Hunky - We Three Kings was on my list for this year too. There is so much that you can do with it. But the power that you put behind the arrangement and performance was special. I was looking for the right word, but I think "power" is it.

Roger Ransom - your incredible runs on O Holy Night created a richness to he overall sound that you would normally need a vocalist to achieve. Well done!

Elssa - Sheer elegance on Waltz of the Flowers. This song fits your flowing style perfectly. I doubt that anyone could pull this off better than you

rnaple - Geensleeves is an excellent Christmas song, because you can grow with it as you go. It sounds great just as you played it, and then you can play it in different styles and with embellishments as you go. Nice job.

Candelight piano - The Chipmunk Song was so much fun! Where did you ever find that? That brings me waaaay back. The sound and visual were just right.

Dannac - Haunting and subtle version of What Child Is This. I had to listen twice to see if I could gather what chord voicings you were using. The sound quality, especially on the bass notes, was also super.

Strings and Wood - Little Drummer Boy was very clean and enjoyable. Just the right feel for this tune. You got the percussive comp part to work. Nice.

Peterws - Really remarkable performances on both numbers. You've got this knack for giving the listener a sense of motion and excitement without seeming rushed. All while playing really hard stuff. It is a very unique style. Love it!

And thanks to all of you who commented on my number. It is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, S & W, Ron and Kenjazz for your nice comments. So glad you enjoyed my pieces.

Ron: LOL ...you had me in stitches and your comments brought back more memories of the song.

Kenjazz: I found the Chipmunk Song in a Dan Coates easy piano collection. Had to play it as I'm a big baby at heart, I love chipmunks and it brought back so many memories.

LadyPayne: Your I'LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS was so lovely. I could see myself sitting in a piano lounge on a cruise ship enjoying champagne watching and listening to you while the ship sailed on.

I "arranged" the same song last year but it's no where as good as yours. By arranging, I mean I took parts of a song I liked and put them together. It's not an original arrangement like yours and not with your flair for it, either :

I'LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS

Ha! The only ones I can play are Elssa`s and Candlelihgt Piano . . "Box" has fallen out wi me!

Elssa - O Holy Night - I`ve heard this a few times this year. A great song; you make nice job of it.

Candlelightpiano - Alvin and the chipmunks Remember well! Great playing here with much fluidity.

I`ll be home . . Atmospheric playing of what sounds like a difficult-in -places song. Bit of jazz creeping in here; Root it out, lass or it`ll get a hold on ya!

Been enjoying the terrific performances posted so far this holiday season.

Jazzwee - Christmas Time Is Here, great jazz there. Your rendition of Christmas Song was also nice.

Kenjazz - Lo, How A Rose E'er Blooming, very good, had that melancholic feel.

Dannac - What Child Is This, well done, enjoyed it.

Strings & Wood - Little Drummer Boy, such a standard Christmas song, you played it very well.

Peterws - A Winter`s Tale and On Christmas Day, both very good, you play well and have good timings.

Rnaple - Alfred's Greensleeves, well done.

Elssa - Loved both covers, O Holy Night and Waltz Of Two Flowers. You always manage to add your own flavor to all songs you play.

Roger Ransom - O Holy Night, wonderful.

Mr Super-Hunky - We Three Kings (Hunky style.) Agree, that the rocky beat of the song is interesting.

Ladypayne - Liked your version of I'll Be Home For Christmas.

I know I'll regret this and later be embarrassed. I'm not going to get a better recording than my last practice due to a slight injury (sprain) so this Box wave is the best I can offer for this holiday thread and it's slow, bumpy and ugly but here it is warts and all blush Said I wouldn't post any crappy songs, I think with another week I could have this, that is if I could practice frown

I hate technology!!!! It just sits there, It's a big (26mg) file so maybe it just takes a while to load. I can't convert it to a mp3 cause all the free sites I used say I'm over my limit for conversion. mad LMK if you can't play it and I'll try something else.

Loved it, Ragdoll! We still have snow on the ground here in Santa Fe, tho it's going the way of the dodo finally. I play a simplified version of this when I manage to do any holiday tunes at all. One of these days I'll have a repertoire of holiday tunes, instead of having to read them all, or just skipping them like I have this year. This was pretty cheerful smile

Very nicely done Ragdoll. I'm sure it will also improve with age.

Yah, snow on the ground on top of ice is what caused my sprain. It's not too bad but hurts on my palm when stretching for octaves. Thanks for the kind words Cathy. smile

Thanks JimF, it will get better but the holiday season may be over before I can do it justice, that's why I posted what I had. It's a nice enough song to keep in rotation for Christmastime next year.
I guess I'll have to keep up my MOYD with one handed playing for awhile. ha

Loved the first two songs. Good trio you work with. Too much fun was had by all . . the second was full o` Christmas pud and exhuded bonhomie. Kids in bed? The third I couldn`t access.

[b]Kenjazz

Loved the blend, cracked bell et al; very appealing (!) and laid back!

Dannac
An Olde English favourite. Good 6-8 tempo with good variations between verses. Well done!

StringsandWood
Drummer boy; steady and precise. Augurs well for your next submission! Good to hear and a super sounding piano.

nraple
Henry 8 did something right . . a popular choice tonight! And why not? Steady as she blows. And your keyboard sounded terrific.

RogerRansom O Holy night. One I missed . . .damn!

MrSuperhunky
This was a terrific arrangement of something I was definitely not expecting; a film score? Variety of range and playing was exemplary; Enigmatic! Just too good, man.

Ragdoll
It was a big download. I`ve had trouble with Box; they want me to register. Don`t decry your efforts. You play considerably less wrong notes than I ever do. I heard only one . . The speed and fluency is round the corner and will certainly come!

Wonderfdul listening to these, guys; Well done!

Thanks peterws,
yes it will... I only had about 2 weeks with this before I over stretched my fingers trying to keep from falling on the ice. I just hope I can get back to HT practice soon.

AFA less wrong notes than you, I dare say your pieces are much more challenging `eh?. laugh

Indeed, I had committed to post something before and felt obligated. Sure wish it had been further along. The only other things I had that were actually fresh were my parts of duets I had from last year. Thanks for the encouragement though.

So many great holiday performances you have submitted already!!! I'll be back and provide comments on all your lovely pieces.

My contribution for this holiday season is my own piano arrangement of Vavilov's Ave Maria. This version of Ave Maria is often credited to the 16th century italian composer Guilio Caccini. But it is believed Vavilov composed it in 1970.

Elssa - So many great tunes! O holy night is one of my favorite Christmas pieces and you nailed it with this performance! Your Waltz of the flowers is another of my favorites. It is always such a treat to see your fingers dance on your piano. Thanks for sharing!

Aramadia - What a treat! Very well played and a fantastic video! What a lovely grand piano you have!

Jazzwee - Many great performances! It is always a pleasure to listen to your bands live recordings! Well done as always!! Thanks for sharing these!

Ragdoll - That was a great performance and nothing to be embarrassed for at all! I know that technology can be frustrating at times. It is like that for all of us I am sure.

Candlelightpiano - Many great performances! You play them with such a refined touch to the keys! You also have a lovely piano room! Great job and thanks for sharing!

Ladypayne - Absolutely lovely! You really bring out the music in your performance here. Great job!

Mr SH - Lovely! Did you compose the piece (We Three Kings)? What is wrong with the line-out on your DP?

Roger - What a great performance! Is that your own arrangement? It sounds very difficult. I loved it! Great job! Thanks for sharing!

Ron - That was fantastic! I really enjoyed it. You really bring out the emotions in the music with this performance. Great job! And please share record more of your pieces and share with us here on PW!

Peter - Your playing is first class as always! Great job with the colors in the video too. What bridge is that?

String and Wood - What a fantastic performance! I like how you play it so gently. Loved it and I love the sound of your piano too! Thanks for sharing!

Dannac - That was a stellar performance of a classical piece! Well done! Thanks for sharing!

KenJazz - I always enjoy your performances here. Well played and I really like how you produce multi instrumental tracks like this. It is magic to me. Great job and thanks for sharing!

Amaruk, that really was an incredible presentation. As many others have said, it really was like watching a TV Christmas special. You should be very proud of that performance. The white piano was just perfect for this piece too.

What is wrong with the line-out on your DP?

Nothing. It is the Zoom H2 that I'm having the problem with. The external mic will not shut off no matter what I do. It should automatically switch over to a digital signal once a mini plug (3.5 mm) is plugged into the line in (or even the external mic) but it doesn't do it anymore. This is why (out of desperation), I recorded my piece via the headphones clamped over the Zoom! Acoustic recordings should be unaffected so no need to go shopping just yet.

Siniohilia - That was a great holiday gig! Merry Xmas to you too!

Mr SH - Too bad your H2 is acting up like that. I had never heard (or heard of) the song "We Three Kings" before so I assumed it was another of your great originals.

Hey, everyone! I haven't been around here much recently, but I stopped by to listen to all the wonderful Christmas performances (and they are all wonderful) and to wish you all a Merry Christmas! One of these days I'll have more time to hang out here again.

Peterws I'm not sure why, but I want to send you money. There is NO-WAY something like this performance should be floating around on the internet for free. Seriously, this is the style of music that I just love.

You literally just sent my goosebump meter off the freakin' charts with the 'Nights in white satin' piece. The improvisation was an absolute pleasure to listen too. Inspiration actually.

Is it me, or are some of these performances in this holiday thread just incredible or what?

Peterws - Beautifully done. If I didn't know the history of that song, I would swear it was a famous Christmas melody, the way you played it.

I have really been enjoying listening to everyone's wonderful recordings! Unfortunately, I am not at home right now and the piano I currently have access to isn't nearly as good as my own (which isn't all that great to begin with) but I still might try to make a recording, we'll see. I really need to record my "original" arrangement of the Carol of the Bells, because if I don't, I may not remember how to play it next year!

Aramadia, I love your performance of Sleigh Ride! What is the arrangement? I'd love to have a copy of that.

Peterws, I am not familiar with Nights in White Satin, but wow, what a beautiful piece and your playing is wonderful!

Mr. SH, as always, fantastic playing and I love your arrangement of W Three Kings!

Everyone, thank you for sharing your music with us, it is wonderful to listen and also very motivating!

Ragdoll - That was a great performance and nothing to be embarrassed for at all! I know that technology can be frustrating at times. It is like that for all of us I am sure.

Thank you for your kind words Amaruk. I enjoyed your presentation as well. Hard to keep up with this forum's responses. AFA technology, well, if it didn't change every 10 minutes it would be more manageable I think. MS+Google is the spawn of satan IMO! laugh laugh

Oh my gosh, Moody Blues?? I'm sure I know that, but I didn't recognize it, probably because your version was so well done. Did you arrange that yourself?

What a fine collection of Christmas music - another great example of the talent, dedication and enthusiasm of our members!

Sinophilia- thanks for letting me know you had posted - I'd been waiting for that video. You and Robi look like you had great fun making it. I think that given it was just the germ of an idea at the end of November this was great --- and it sure put a smile on my face smile

Thank you, it was "just for fun" (needless to say!) but it was the perfect excuse for Robi to pick up that violin. Now I have to think of another silly duet so she doesn't put it down! She isn't half bad given that I forbid her to practice more than a few minutes at a time, fearing that the neighbours would complain. That thing is terribly loud! I had to open the lid of my piano so it wasn't completely drowned.

I'M LATE!!!

I made my own original variations on 'We Wish You a Merry Christmas' using only the chords and my ears, keep in mind, it is largely improvised, like a planned improvisation ,and very sloppy and some of the chords may have not been correct and I tried to do a lot of things that are beyond my technical ability, I've been playing for about a year without a teacher,

Here it is, I don't celebrate Christmas but I played it for my friends who did:

I was not able to get this recorded in time for Christmas, but just in case anyone is interested, here is my recording of the Carol of the Bells.

Carol of the Bells

This is my somewhat-original arrangement of the Carol of the Bells. Part of it is taken from Michele McLaughlin's arrangement and other parts of it are my arrangement and embellishment of a more traditional version of the Carol of the Bells.

Merry late-Christmas and Happy New Year!

I decided to start the New Year with some piano music, and this thread is perfect!

Amaruk - just lovely.

Sinophilia - I loved it! Happy new year to you and Robi, too.

peterws - oh cool. Congrats on the new Steinway - you deserve it!

Mohannad - delightful!

Shiro Kuro - it's great to hear your playing again! I know you miss the piano you had to leave behind, but obviously you've put the digital to good use, and this was beautiful!

I'm going out to breakfast with a good friend in a few minutes, so I think my New Year is starting well. Best wishes to everyone here at Piano World!

Thanks for listening and commenting everyone!

Cathy, I didn't think this would sound very good, because I just recorded it from my digital straight into the laptop (using an aux cable) but it actually sounds fine. So my new year's resolution is to record my playing regularly and share recordings, hopefully once a month. I realized I really missed doing that!

ShiroKuro: That was an incredibly beautiful variation of 'Carol of the Bells'. I've been waiting since the beginning of this thread to hear your long awaited piece and you certainly did not disappoint.

I just love how so many members are starting to branch out and improvise on their own. Excellent.

Mohannad: You too were a bit late but equally worth the wait. [You know what they say about saving the best for last!] Wonderful variations in your performance.

Thanks to everyone who had participated in this years ABF Holiday Performances. It is something that we casually do every year that starts the beginning of December and runs until we can't stand listening to X-mas music any longer!, only to look forward and do it again next year.

I'm looking forward to 2014 and wishing everyone a safe, happy and healthy new year.

Thanks again for everyone's participation.

Very excellent bells here. Not a cracked one amongst `em! Interesting in that the right hand was pretty constant much/most o` the time whilst the left introduced variation. This is the basis for a lot of classical and popular music we have today. Darned good playing!

Mr. Super Hunky....
Does this thread allow singing along with the playing?

I was just thinking. Among the piano parties. Maybe even more. With groups. The host provide helium. Then without warning. Have everyone sing: "Christmas don't be late." by the Chipmunks. Host plays piano accompaniment.
It could be a ton of fun and laughter.
Then post the recording on this thread at Christmas.

Only problem would be ego's. People who can't accept humble humor and just plain fun.

YES, of course! Hey, if you're willing to sing, I'm willing to listen. This is a FUN place with NO stuffy people. that's what the 'Pianist Corner' is for! Haha, just kidding, or maybe not!

Anyway, Sure, sing on Helium, spiked egg nog, or whatever brings you enough guts to sing in public. It's the casual atmosphere here in the ABF that everyone loves and comes here for. Lots of us end up staying around too like furniture 'cuz we just don't want to leave. And we shouldn't because it's just too much fun.

This is what I come to the internet for. Not to just hang around with 'friend collectors' on Facebook.

Peterws, Mr SH, thanks!

Mr SH, thank you for remembering! You know, I almost wasn't going to post this here, seeing how late I am, but I figured I should since I said I would smile

The take-away: telling people what you're going to do helps push you towards actually completing the task!

Just don`t get the gas bottles mixed up, will ya? Or maybe we get the "posthumourous" version . . . .
