ForScore vs. UnRealBook on the iPad #2182244 11/14/13 10:54 AM

Although I like ForScore, I've pretty much stopped using it in favor of UnRealBook for two reasons:

1) With my Airturn bluetooth, with ForScore it disables the iPad's keypad, forcing me to use a bluetooth keypad or lean down to switch the airturn. With UnRealBook, I can still use the iPad's keypad.

2) I have two iPads side-by-side. With UnRealBook, I have the iPad on the right as a slave to the one on the left. As long as I have the same pdf on both iPads, when I load it on the left, it is automatically loaded on the right. It will set the iPad on the right to stay one page ahead of the one on the left, so I'm always seeing two pages, and the airturn turns the pages on both at the same time.

Anybody else tried them both?

I have both on my iPad - don't see much of a difference between them, not a power user I guess. I have been using Forescore mostly. At a jam session a few weeks ago a bass player also had Forescore and we linked our two iPads via bluetooth and he was able to send me a chart he wanted to do. so that was pretty cool.

Settings in ForScore has an option to force the virtual keyboard to always show. I needed to use this with my pedal as much like the airturn it pretends to be a keyboard connected to the iPad.

I didn't know you could use the keyboard with the air turn in ForScore - I'll check it out. I don't think you can switch pages on two iPads with ForScore, but that only matters if you are using more than one iPad!

I hope to receive my AirTurn tomorrow, which I plan to use with ForScore. If the it ends up disabling my iPad's keyboard, I may give UnRealBook a look. (I'm not locked into either app as I just bought ForScore two days ago - but I do like it so far...)

Just received my AirTurn (Yippee!), and linked it up to my iPad Mini. Very easy to do and it works as advertised. But now I have a few questions:

1. How do you set it to do a page turn when you LIFT your foot? (The default is to step on the pedal to force a page turn. I'm not sure yet which way I'd prefer it, so I'd like to try both.)

2. Do most of you wear shoes when using the AirTurn? It sems that wearing soft soles (such as slippers) would give you a better "feel" for the pedals.

3. Can I use the USB charging cable with an iPad wall charger? (The docs say to use any USB wall charger, but I'd like to be sure before I try it.)

4. Finally, how long did it take for you to use the unit seamlessly? My first (admittedly short) effort seems to indicate to me that there's an adjustment/learning period involved.

Thanks!

partial answer, the best I can do so far:

1. Can't answer, haven't tried it yet
2. I wear shoes, but I don't use the airturn pedals, I'm using piano sustain - type pedals instead.
3. Yes
4. Not there yet, still working on that part. I think it will be easier with the "lift-your-foot" technique.

OK, I just tried it out. Basically, it works with a quick "up-down", so the page still turns when you put the pedal back down. At least that's how mine seems to be working. Smooth enough, but it does mean you have to leave your foot on the pedal the whole time.
