Well, there's the famous Chaconne... But I want to ask what are people's thoughts on his transcription of BWV 565, Toccata and Fugue in D Minor? Obviously we lose quite a bit of the magnificent uber deep bass notes from the organ... but it seems such an awesome piece to perform!

I've only ever played that piece using the original organ score (if it really is original - it could have been originally a piece for solo violin, and may not even be by JSB....), modifying it in order to play the important pedal notes on the piano.
Personally, I think this is one Bach/Busoni transcription where Busoni has to look to his laurels - I prefer Carl Tausig's and Louis Brassin's arrangements. Percy Grainger and Ignaz Friedman also made their own arrangements (or possibly, derangements...) which I haven't heard. And Cyprien Katsaris has played his own astoundingly virtuosic arrangement.....

I feel like the Busoni transcription of this piece is one of his lesser transcriptions. I think Busoni set a standard in transcribing the violinsolo-chaconne for piano in a quasi organ/orchestral way, but he never surpassed that effort, only matched it with the prelude and fugue in D, but that was already an organpiece and it is musically less imposing.

I played the Chaconne, and I want to do the Prelude and Fugue in D Major next. I love the d major fugue, such a great piece for practising technique; but I've always had difficulty reaching those massive intervals in the non arpeg. sections

I forgot to mention that Liszt didn't do a slight effort in transcribing the g-minor fantasy and fugue, equal in quality to the Busoni-chaconne.
