Good evening folks,

Kawai Japan has recently issued a software update V1.07 for the CA95 and CA65 digital pianos.

These updates counter undesireable noises that could occur when adjusting certain settings, correct some charactristics of the 'Auto Power Off' function, and improve a number of other functions.

The full changelog is listed below:

Quote

V1.07 (October 2013)

- Prevent tone generator from creating ‘pop’ noise under certain circumstances.

V1.06 (March 2013)

- Adjusted specifications of ‘Damper Resonance’.
- Fixed issue with non-sounding beats when using Metronome rhythm patterns.
- Adjusted behaviour of ‘Auto Power Off’ function.
- Changed ‘Part Balance’ setting name to ‘Volume’ when using Finger Exercises.
- Fixed ‘Steady Beat’ mode when using Concert Magic function.
- Fixed issue with some notes being dropped when using Concert Magic function.
- Fixed noise that could occur when adjusting ‘Damper Resonance’ level.
- Fixed oscillation noise that could occur with some effects when turning the power ON.
- Fixed oscillation noise that could occur when change reverb type.

V1.02 (May 2012)

- Changed default value of ‘Auto Power Off’ function.
- Changed volume level of ‘Factory Check’ mode.
- Allow the same note to be played by an SMF file and received MIDI data simultaneously.
- Fixed issue with key velocity when saving SMF files.

The software updates and update instructions can be downloaded directly from Kawai Japan at the the following URL:

http://www.kawai.co.jp/worldwide/support/updates.html

Note that Kawai software updates are cumulative, meaning that the v1.07 update also includes the fixes and improvements of v1.06, v1.02 etc.

CA95 and CA65 owners are encouraged to update their instruments to use this latest software version. Please feel free to post your feedback in this thread.

Have a great weekend!

Cheers,
James

Is it correct to assume that while the CA95 and CS10 have similar software that this update is not to be performed on the CS10?

Maybe the CS10 already has the updates in it?

Correct - this update is not intended for the CS10.

I believe there should be a model ID check when attempting to update the software, effectively preventing incorrect updates (for a different instrument) from being installed.

I do not have any inside knowledge, however I expect similar updates for the CS7/CS10 will also be released in the near future.

Kind regards,
James

Nice to see Kawai providing updates on sound parameters. Too bad I have no access to those two models.

Wish Roland step up their update game.

Thank you! I'll keep an eye out for such an update. I did just receive delivery of the CS10 last week (I previously I had a Yamaha NU1) so perhaps if those updates were in the works for a period of time my piano might have whatever enhancements/fixes already present. Regardless, I suspect any such updates will probably be mentioned here (and no doubt by you).

Best,
Eric

Nice, time to brick my piano. laugh

Thanks for the heads-up, KJ! smile

EDIT: To follow up, I have just performed the update. Everything went smoothly save for the fact that when the update finished, the power button would not turn off the piano. I had to disconnect it from the mains to make it shut down. After reconnecting and turning on the piano, everything seems to be working just fine. smile

Hi EJT,

Would you care to start a new thread and share your thoughts on your CS10 and NU1? I think many of us here would be keen to read.

Congrats on receiving your new CS10!

Thank you for the follow-up.

I'm afraid I don't know why the power button would not turn the instrument off after the update (it may be related to the 'Auto Power Off' functionality present on modern Kawai DPs?), but have reported this characteristic to the CA95/CA65 development team, so will keep you posted of any developments.

I'm glad that - aside from this point - the update went smoothly. As noted above, there are fail-safes in place that should prevent incorrect or incomplete updates from affecting the instruments.

Cheers,
James

Thanks, James. smile I'll report any other issues I may come across (hopefully none).

Also, the update seems to have gotten rid of the "vibrating" effect I experienced when playing certain note combinations with headphones on. Tell the dev guys they did a good job on that. wink

Okay, a response from R&D regarding the non-functioning power switch:

Quote
Yes, it is necessary to hold the power button for 2-3 seconds.
The reason is to prevent the power button from being pressed (i.e. turning off the instrument) while the software update is in progress.

That definitely makes sense. wink

I'll revise the update instructions to reflect this point shortly.

Thank you once again Clayman for bring it to my attention.

Cheers,
James

Oh, right! I'll keep that in mind if another update comes around in the future.

Thanks for the info, KJ! wink

Hello James,
I tried to upgrade my CA 95 but without succes. First I checked the current version of software and that is: V1.02. Then I prepared a USB stick (structure MS-DOS FAT 32) dragged the file CA95_040.SYS on my computer to the USB stick. Connected the USB stick to the USB port. Pressed and holded the buttons 1-2-3 and turned on the instrument. Then on the display came a message O.SW & LED and on the right side of the display some rows of dots. Then a short message came that a USB stick was connected. And then..... nothing happened since. Only the visible message on the screen O.SW & LED and the rows of dots. Even after several minutes waiting, no start of the upgrade process. Then I turned of the instrument. Took the USB stick out and happily my piano still works, but not with the new software. Please comment on this. Thank you.
Dhamma

First, may I please ask you to confirm that you are pressing (and holding) the correct 1-2-3 buttons when turning on the instrument?

The are two sets of buttons with 1-2-3 labels - the FUNCTION buttons (located directly below the LCD display), and the REGISTRATION buttons, which are typically used as the sound selection buttons.

In order to perform the update, the FUNCTION buttons should be used, as indicated by the illustration below.

Please double check that you are pressing the correct buttons.

James

@Dutch Dhamma, the "dragged the file" part raised a little red flag for me. Make sure that the file was indeed copied to the flash drive, Windows sometimes just creates a link to the file instead of copying it directly.

Clayman, that's a good point, however I believe Windows will copy the file when the destination is another device (e.g. a USB stick).

James

Hello James,
I realy feel like a dumb blonde! I was indeed pressing the WRONG 1-2-3 buttons! When checking the current software version, with the 4-5-6 buttons, my eyes became fixed on the 1-2-3 Registration buttons directly above them. This way I forgot about the 1-2-3 Function buttons. So I tried again, now pushing the right buttons and completed the software upgrade succesfully to v1.07. Thanks for your help.
What would I be without you smile
Dhamma

Hello Dhamma, thank you for responding - I'm glad to hear you were able to update your CA95 successfully.

Please don't feel bad about mistaking the two sets of buttons either, especially when the version checking function uses the 4-5-6 registration buttons. Believe it or not, I actually made the same mistake when initially preparing the update instructions PDF!

Cheers,
James
